In My previous posts I introduced El Lissitzky and Yakov Chernikhov, two constructivist architects that published in their books Inspiring images of Modern and Fantasies Architecture (1923-1933)

Apparently they are the source of inspiration for other talented architects.

In 1923–1925 El Lissitzky proposed and developed the idea of horizontal skyscrapers

Lissitzky argued that as long as humans cannot fly, moving horizontally is natural and moving vertically is not….

Where there is not sufficient land for construction, a new plane created in the air at medium altitude should be preferred to an American- tower.

These buildings, according to Lissitzky, also provided superior insulation and ventilation for their inhabitants.

More than 80 years later (2006) Steven Holl designe an horizontal Skyscraper. The Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China, a mixed-use building including hotel, offices, serviced apartments, and public park (2006-2009)

Frank Gehry and the Morphosis architecture firm are Identified by their “sculptural buildings” (you are invited to sea my posts about The “Sculpted decade”)

In my previous posts I presented Frank Gehry’s “floor plan strategy”.

He designs complex sculptural buildings in reasonable budgets and without compromising with their planning needs.

In this post I will show another successful “floor plan strategy”, of an important member in the prestigious group of sculpt architects….Thom Mayne founder of Los Angeles firm Morphosis.

Below is shown, a typical floor plan of the Sciences Building of Cooper Union college in New York designed by the Morphosis firm.

Now look at the picture below, are the square floor plan above and the building in the picture below, the same building?

1. Constructivist teaching theoretical framework holds that learning always builds upon knowledge that we already know.

2. Constructivist learning theory says that all knowledge is constructed from a base of prior knowledge.

3. Constructivists suggest that learning is more effective when we are actively engaged in the learning process.

4. We learn how to learn, by giving the training to take initiative from our own learning experiences.

When you ask an architect, how can you define “Architectural style”?

The Common answer is that Architectural styles classify architecture in terms of the use of form, techniques, materials, time period and region.

I want to sagest a bit different commentary on this phenomenon called “Architectural style” ….

I will try to present my position
with the help of a number of projects designed by Architect Richard Rogers.
I will start with the Pompidou Center in Paris planned by Rogers And Renzo Piano in the seventies,
And I will continue with number of projects planned by Richard Rogers’s office in the eighties.

Pompidou Center in Paris is characterized by an upside-down approach. The skeleton and mechanical systems of the building are exposed outside the inner shell.

This design style is acceptable to be called “high-tech architecture”

Recently I read the Inspiring book by Walter Isaacson ”Steve Jobs”.
I came across a Steve Jobs quote: “Eventually you should try to expose yourself to the best things
that people did, then try to implement these things out of what you do I mean the saying of Picasso “Good artists copy, great artists steal” And we never were ashamed to steal great ideas”

It is quite a while that I trace the inspiration sources of Frank Gehry….

Particularly I was interested in identifying the sources of his inspiration for His unique morphology, defined in projects like the “Dancing House” In Prague or The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao – Spain (See the following images).

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases: knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”: as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”= (“Codex rules”) develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them, tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…
