Normally my blog is a place where I trace the inspiration sources of architects.

I debated whether to view the Next story ….

Here is the unresolved story about MVRDV’s inspiration Sources of the “pixilated Cloud skyscrapers” in Seoul….

Eliinbar’s Sketchbook 2011 – Frank Gehry dealing with economic reality

-

If you will be asked, how does look, a typical Frank Gehry‘s building. Most of us will agree that they look very sculptural.

-

Just as Frank Gehry’s Lou Ruvo Center Looks in the following image….-

-

Now look at the next image…would you believe this is the same building shown above?

This image is Gehry’s Lou Ruvo Center building  rear façade ,

It looks like a completely different building….

-

-

It looks like this building is a demo to Gehry’s ultimate strategy implemented in many of his projects

I suppose that Gehry developed this “strategy” to deal with the high construction budget needed to built his sculptural Buildings ….

What did I learn from this post?

1.Frank Gehry does not give up his desire for creativity and uniqueness .

2.He designs buildings with effective floor plans.

3.Gehry develops tools (Codex rules), and uses his architect skills to  design buildings directed budget.

4.I do not always identify with the result of his “strategy”….

Frank Gehry’s creative process, how he comes up with among the most distinctive building designs in the world? – “Conscious Inspiration”?

Posted in nature, public buildings with tags , , , , , , on December 22, 2011 by eliinbar

December 2010 Architect  Frank Gehry has unveiled his designs for a new business school (Dr. Chau Chak Wing Building) at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia

-

In this post Gehry’s share with us his Inspiration sources and design process, how he comes up with among the most distinctive building designs in the world?

-

Here are some of Gehry’s Quotes from the officially introduction of the new Dr Chau Chak Wing Building business school at the University of Technology Sydney:

-

1.“Fundamentally, , it starts with a response to the brief. The client in this case wanted something that would break down the silos typical in a university and stimulate high levels of interaction, creativity and play”

2.“I met with the dean and his faculty and the brief was that the business school needed to open up to the creative processes a bit more and open themselves up to creative thinking.”

3.“You sense the need for creative play is human and we need it and we yearn for it.”

4.”My own creativity depends absolutely on the ability for “child like play”.

5.“My response to the brief was a “treehouse” design analogyvarious platforms at different levels, connected by branches and open spaces in between

Richard Rogers & Architectural style = “Conscious Inspiration”?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on December 18, 2011 by eliinbar

When you ask an architect, how can you define “Architectural style”?

The Common answer is that Architectural styles classify architecture in terms of the use of form, techniques, materials, time period and region.

I want to sagest a bit different commentary on this phenomenon called “Architectural style” ….

I will try to present my position
with the help of a number of projects designed by Architect Richard Rogers.
I will start with the Pompidou Center in Paris planned by Rogers And Renzo  Piano in the seventies,
And I will continue with number of projects planned by
Richard Rogers’s office in the eighties.

Pompidou Center in Paris is characterized by an upside-down approach. The skeleton and mechanical systems of the building are exposed outside the inner shell.

This design style is acceptable to be called “high-tech architecture”

Frank Gehry & Steve Jobs, Do they have something in common?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on December 11, 2011 by eliinbar

Recently I read the Inspiring book by Walter Isaacson ”Steve Jobs”.
I came across a Steve Jobs quoteEventually you should try to expose yourself to the best things
that people did
, then try to implement these things out of what you do I mean the saying of Picasso
Good artists copy, great artists stealAnd we never were ashamed to steal great ideas”

-

Here is a short clip …. Steve Jobs talks about getting great ideas: http://www.google.co.il/url?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DCW0DUg63lqU&rct=j&sa=X&ei=CdTjTp_MEIXBhAe-vu3tAQ&ved=0CC0QuAIwAg&q=Picasso+%22Good+artists+copy,+great+artists+steal%22+&usg=AFQjCNFqCuySalwWusri05Kt0G6GQB0o4w

-

It is quite a while that I trace the inspiration sources of Frank Gehry….

Here is a short clip where Frank Gehry talks about his inspiration sources: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Hh1QYWVdQV0

-

Particularly I was interested in identifying the sources of his inspiration for His unique morphology, defined in projects like the “Dancing House”  In Prague or The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao – Spain  (See the following images).

-

What did I learn from this post?

Frank Gehry and Steve Jobs admire Knowledge

They believe that you can find Inspiration sources anywhere.

You don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from anything that can promote you ….

You are committed to develop the tools and skills to understand and use your Inspiration sources in a beneficial way for you ….

Possibly the “Conscious Inspiration method” should assimilate a similar approach….

-

The Conscious Inspiration Methode:

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”= (“Codex rules”) develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

MVRDV & Le Corbusier and the ultimate inspirational roof terrace

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , on December 5, 2011 by eliinbar

Eliinbar’s sketchbook 2011 Le Corbusier’s ultimate inspirational roof terrace

-

In this post, I want to introduce a rarer option that the Unite D’habitation in Marseille roof  terrace is MVRDV’s morphological inspiration source For at least three buildings and projects they designed.

-

Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation in Marseille roof terrace : The majority of the communal aspects in the “Unite d’habitation” do not occur within the building; rather they are placed on the roof. Its flat roof is designed as a communal terrace with  a running track, a shallow paddling pool for children, and an open-air theatre

Learning from Frank Gehry ….Chapter 3 – the most successful “floor plan Strategy”….

Posted in public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , on November 21, 2011 by eliinbar

This post summarizes my “micro trilogy” about Frank Gehry’s “floor plan Strategies”

I will share with you. Gehry’s most considered building, with what I believe, the most successful “floor plan Strategy”…. The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao,Spain.

-

First  I will present The EMR Communication and Technology Center.

This building is a typical  example of Gehry’s characteristic ”Floor plan Strategy” in the mid 90th.

I call this strategy the“Personal fan shape strategy”.

Gehry’s first  step, is to design unique morphological-forms.

Then weaves them in to a wonderful composition…. (It will be fascinating to trace Gehry’s inspiration sources when designing does unique morphological forms …. I already have some ideas I will share them with you, in my next posts).

The Guggenheim museum First floor plan is a characteristic example of a combination of two of Gehry’s floor plans strategies, the “Sculptural Warping Strategy” that is represented in my previous post and the “Personal fan shape strategy” shown above, By the EMR Communication and Technology Center.

-

Eliinbar sketches 2011, .  …. Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, floor plan Strategy

-

What did I learn from this post?

Gehry does not give up his desire for creativity and uniqueness.

Over the years Gehry develops new floor plan Strategies (Codex rules), and implement them in his designs to realize his architectural vision.

His Strategies is directed to provide a novel and unique interpretation to the common “boxes”

Gehry’s Quate:  “Ninety-eight percent of buildings are boxes, which tells me that a lot of people are in denial. We live and work in boxes. People don’t even notice that”

-

Developing tools (Codex rules) is something we can learn as a method.

I can even suggest a name for this method “Conscious Inspiration”.

Zaha Hadid’s Imaginary Inspiration Source?

 Note the following similar characteristics:

1. The unique morphology of the curve at the junction between wall and floor in the lower left of the sketch.

2. Clear division into two parts. Open vertical space with stairs and closed horizontal spaces.

3. The closed spaces are characterized by shifting relation to each other. Open spaces are obtained by the steps.

-

In this Post I will show Gehry’s early strategy ,preserving a Museum program, and still expresses his desire to a unique building, with sculptural characteristics.
