What did I learn from Bjarke-Ingels quotes about his approach to developing Individual Design Tools?

1. Bjarke-Ingels develops his tools correspond to his architecture philosophy.

2. I can assume that Bjarke-ingels’s original thinking, is generating his design tools.

This is A typical Unite D’habitation section showing the “streets” (1)  and the interlocking cross-over units designed by Le Corbusier at 1945-1946

Notice the similar design solution…. the “streets” (inner corridor)  and the interlocking cross-over units.

It took me a while to clearly determine ….

The most significant Architecture Firm working today…. that implements the “conscious Inspiration Method”….in Perfection …. Is  Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG

I will start  with the first guiding principle in the “conscious inspiration method” – “Knowledge”

Here are two of Bjarke-Ingelss’ quotes from an interview he made in 2009 for archi-ninja.com. I can assume these quotes reflect Bjarke-Ingels approach to knowledge

What did I learn from Bjarke-Ingels quotes about his approach to knowledge? 

1. Bjarke-Ingels is not intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings and architects.

2. He develops techniques how to choose the right building to be his “Inspiration Source”.

3. The “Inspiration Source building” will play the role of the “Planning Process Generator” to be used later in his design process….

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The Chinese architect Wang Shu, has been awarded the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize.

I must confess….
I was unfamiliar with the work of  Shu Wang,

In this post I present a building designed by Shu Wang….The new Art Academy in Hangzhou  China.

-

It is really hard to ignore the  inspiration sources of this building….there is a strong sense that Le Corbusier is still among us…. working in China….

The design strategy adopted by Shu Wang In China Is a combination of modernist architectural citations along with awareness to local materials and local construction methods …

It reminds me Le Corbusier’s approach. while planning Chandigarh  in India, in the 1950s.

In my last post I tried to find out if  BIG’s architecture is based on the principles of “conscious inspiration”.

In this post I will elaborate this issue through the following example….

In 2003 Snohetta Architects designed the Oslo Opera House shown in the next image.

A building with unique architectural characteristic.

A Kind of a new experience….a building that’s simply allows people to enjoy walking on it….

From 2010 to 2011 BIG Architects designed three unique buildings.

Buildings that’s allow people to enjoy their  morphology…. For purposes Such as skiing on the roof slope of the Amagerforbraending – waste treatment plant, or Cycling on the Curved roofs of the Danish-Pavilion in Shanghai Expo-2010. (these buildings are shown in the next images)

Their guiding design principle, I guess, is inspired consciously from the Snohetta’s Oslo Opera House .

BIG are not intimidated to get inspired from Snohetta’s Oslo Opera House. Once they develop their dsign tools, it leads them to high quality and creative architecture.

Why did I choose the Institute du monde Arabe to be my Inspiration Source?

First I will share with you two main and unique characteristics of my project described in my  sketch - book above.

1. It is located at the edge of an urban block.

2. Its main façade, reference to a very large urban space.

-

What are the unique architectural characteristics of the Institute du monde Arabe building?

 1. It is located at the Edge of a typical Parisian urban block like it is shown in the next sketch

Notice the Institute du Monde Arabe unique curving façade that emphasize the edge of the urban block

2. The Institute du monde Arabe main facade is very well observed from the Seine River (large urban space) as it is shown in the next Image

 Notice Jean Nouvel’s choice of  materials, the shiny and sealed glass for the foreground of the building  and the transparent glass for the rear of the building

Zaha Hadid is undoubtedly leading the architectural trend, I like to call “Plastelina Buildings“ .

There are a large number of well known public buildings that their main entrance is characterized by an arch….

The main entrance to the Petit Palais in Paris, shown in the image below, is a typical example

Now let’s examine Zaha Hadid’s entrance to the chengdu-contemporary-art-centre in China

shown in the image Below

Notice to the main entrance (center of the building) is emphasized by a dominant arch …. it is a similar designing approach we identified in the “Petit Palais”  in Paris

And now Observe the main entrance of the Nuragic and Contemporany Art Museum designed by Zaha Hadid , shown in the image Below.

It is also emphasized by an Impressive arch ….

It seems like a new trend is developing in recent years.

I call this trend…. The “ T Buildings trend”

long ago …. when architects talk about “ T buildings”….  They were referring to buildings with a floor plan that has the shape of “T” like in the next image….

The construction of the new wing of the Tel Aviv Museum is finished.

I’m pleased to announce….Tel Aviv leads one of the hottest trends in architecture today….The “Origami Envelopes trend”.

I am aware of Preston Scott Cohen’s unique architectural geometry approach, that gave rise to the “Origami envelopes trend” ….

Notice the formal similarity between the Tel Aviv museum and the origami swan

1. Both were created from the practice of geometry.

2. Both “facades” are characterized by sharp lines.

3. Both are characterized by a shell composed of numerous straight surfaces.

4. It seems that the shell has also a constructive role (Actually in the museum a steel construction was covered by precast concrete slabs)

This blog focuses on the “sources of inspiration” of architects,

We are aware of the enormous architectural information we are exposed to in the web.

And as we found out…. it has big influence on us ….
