Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG…. the most Conscious Inspiration firm working today -Chapter two

This post is the second chapter of a “trilogy” about Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG…. the most Conscious Inspiration firm working today….

I will start with the second guiding principle in the conscious inspiration method …. Developing Individual Design Tools

Here are some more Bjarke-Ingels quotes from the interview he made in 2009 for archi-ninja.com

“Rather than choosing between the practical or the ideal – we strive towards a pragmatic utopian architecture that turns making the world a better place into a practical objective”. “The right mix of practical and everyday ingredients”

What did I learn from Bjarke-Ingels quotes about his approachto developing Individual Design Tools?

1. Bjarke-Ingels develops his tools correspond to his architecture philosophy.

2. I can assume that Bjarke-ingels’s original thinking, is generating his design tools.

Notice the graphic qualities of the analysis sketches (I learned from Bjarke Ingels’s interview that before he became an architect he wanted to be a graphic novelist)

And here is another Bjarke-ingels’s graphic analysis….an isometric scheme that explains the volumetric and movement strategy, BIG + JDS = PLOT Apply in the apartments building.

This is A typical Unite D’habitation section showing the “streets” (1) and the interlocking cross-over units designed by Le Corbusier at 1945-1946

Notice the similar design solution…. the “streets” (inner corridor) and the interlocking cross-over units.

And the image below was done 40 years later…. this is an elevation section of a “double house” in Utrecht designed by MVRDV at 1995

Yes….. “Conscious Inspiration” is everywhere….

BIG is no doubt…. the most “Conscious Inspiration firm”….

Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG…. “Pragmatic utopian architecture or “Conscious Inspiration” Architecture

Bjarke Ingels is a another successful graduate from Rem Koolhaas’s school ,the Office of Metropolitan Architecture ,OMA.

BIG ( Bjarke Ingels Groop) is a appreciated  firm that wins architecture competitions, on a regular base, all over the world.

Bjarke Ingels Design philosophy is very pragmatic:

Architecture has been dominated by two opposing extremes “Eccentric curiosities” and “boring boxes”

Bjarke Ingels believes that there is a “third way” a “pragmatic utopian architecture”or as I understand it “Conscious Inspiration Architecture”

1.“conscious inspiration” is a pragmatic method that can lead us architects to be a successful firm.

2. “Eccentric curiosities” and “boring boxes” is out “pragmatic utopian architecture” is In.

3. “pragmatic utopian architecture” is designing according to the principles of The “conscious Inspiration Method”….“with the  methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture”.

It seems like a new trend is developing in recent years.

I call this trend…. The “ T Buildings trend”

long ago …. when architects talk about “ T buildings”….  They were referring to buildings with a floor plan that has the shape of “T” like in the next image….

In this post, I want to introduce a rarer option that the Unite D’habitation in Marseille roof  terrace is MVRDV’s morphological inspiration source For at least three buildings and projects they designed.

Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation in Marseille roof terrace : The majority of the communal aspects in the “Unite d’habitation” do not occur within the building; rather they are placed on the roof. Its flat roof is designed as a communal terrace with  a running track, a shallow paddling pool for children, and an open-air theatre

MVRDV & Le Corbusier and the ultimate inspiration building, Le Corbusier’s “Unite D’habitation” in Marseille

In this post and the following posts, I want to share with you a fascinating discovery about Le Corbusier’s “Unite D’habitation” in Marseille.

Unite D’habitation in Marseille was the first order Le Corbusier received from the French state starts to be scheduled immediately after the Second World War (1945-46),

Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation in Marseille comprises 337 apartments arranged over twelve stories, all suspended on large piloti. The building also incorporates shops with architectural bookshop,sporting, medical and educational facilities, a hotel which is open to the public, and a gastronomic restaurant. Its flat roof is designed as a communal terrace with sculptural ventilation stacks, a running track, a shallow paddling pool for children, and an open-air theatre

The building is constructed in béton brut (rough-cast concrete) and was finished in 1952.

MVRDV is a Rotterdam, Netherlands-based architecture and urban design practice founded in 1991. The name is an acronym for the founding members

Their first realized commission was the new offices for VPRO in Hilversum, Netherlands (1993–1997). 

MVRDV is well-known for its philosophy of densification and multiple space use. 

The office researches and debates global ecological issues such as the consequences of urban sprawl, the bio-industry and climate change.

Le Corbusier’s  Unite D’habitation is characterized by a cellular morphology.Le Corbusier developed a system of interior “streets” every three floors that provided the horizontal access to interlocking cross-over units.

The Conscious Inspiration Methode:

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

In pursuit after Zaha Hadid’s inspiration Sources 4-”Tree of knowledge”

In this post I present MVRDV’s Sloterpark Swimming Pool and Zaha Hadid’s Pierres Vives-building , housing three government departments .

Zaha Hadid is today the most widely publicized and influential architect by Google test. 

It’s not the formal similarity, why I pose the two projects, and I don’t have the intention to insinuate that Zaha Hadid copied from another. 

My goal is to encourage the developing of “Codex rules“for a new architectural planning process that I call  Conscious Inspiration.

The Pierres Vives Building “ Housing three government department emerging as a “tree of Knowledge” three institutions unified within a single envelope”

The spectacular design of the building is inspired by the idea of a “tree of knowledge” as an organizational diagram for the entire project. 

Zaha Hadid uses the concept of trunk and tree to organize and divide up the complexity of the administrative citadel as a whole.

Here’s some more information from Zaha Hadid Architects about the “Stone Towers” :

 “Inspired by the patterns and textures of ancient Egyptian stonework, the north and south facades of each tower will be covered with recesses and protrusions emphasising the effects of light and shadow on the surfaces”

“Ancient Egyptian stonework incorporates a vast array of patterns and textures that, when illuminated by the intense sunlight of the region, creates animated displays of light and shadow”
