In 2010 and later in 2014 I published posts that presented a relatively new trend for that period-  “Shifted Buildings“

And this is a Museum built in NewYork City,designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

 Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa are partners in the Japanese architectural firm SANAA.

 SANAA has won the 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the profession’s highest honor.

SANAA received the commission of this Museum in 2002 and completion was in 2007

What do Rem koolhaas  and SANAA have to say?

This is how Rem koolhaas describes the main configuration of the De Rotterdam complex: “a building that consists of separate volumes that were slightly shifted vis-a-vis each other”

And this is SANAA’s description for the museum in New York: “We knew we could not maximize the entire site with solid architecture, we had to reduce the buildings mass somehow to create space between it and the perimeter. The solution of the shifted boxes arrived quickly”.

Introduction (very short one):

 At the beginning of the decade I published a number of posts that described current trends in architecture, who raise a disturbing question.

Did architects choose to give up creativity, forget about the site where they plan their buildings, and create global architecture?

Is it bad for the architecture profession?

And if so

How to deal with this challenge?

At the time,  I suggested not to be afraid of the phenomenon,

And to develop a method of training architects,

responding to the new reality.

I called this method “conscious inspiration”

In the last two years I started practical steps, with architecture students ,to test the effectiveness of the method.

I will share with you experiences in the next posts

Epilogue:

Architects are inspired by existing buildings as a method.

What does it indicates about us?

It indicates that there is an expanding phenomenon and we cannot ignore it.

So what’s the problem?

The problem is that some of us are experiencing difficulty getting inspired from existing buildings.

Sometimes the result of this process looks more like “Copy-paste” rather than “conscious inspiration”.

So how to get inspired consciously, from existing buildings?

–

–

What are the questions we should ask ourselves, in order to determine whether the design process occurred, is more like “copy paste” than “conscious inspiration“?

Here are a few ideas:

1. Checking suitability for the immediate environment.

2. Checking the suitability of relevant materials to the environment.

3. Examination of morphological compatibility to the environment.

4. Check for climatic compatibility.

5. Check of the suitability of the planning to the building designation.

 

And the most important test.

Is the project architect, brought something of himself.

In this post I will emphasize the differences between Conscious Inspiration and Copy Paste

—

 

In 1957, the engineer Pier Luigi Nervi and the architect Annibale Vitellozzi, planned the Pallazzetto dello Sport In Rome, Shown in the picture below.ROME: PALAZZETTO. The Palazzetto dello sport, an indoor arena in Rome, Italy, built for the 1960 Summer Olympics.

The building was built of a concrete structure, typical of the period.

Notice the dominant morphological configuration of the dome and the concrete base, exposed in the form of triangles.

60 years later, GMP Architekten completes the design of the Samara Stadium for the 2018 World Football Championship in Russia.      Samara_Arena

The building is built from advanced steel construction that enables dealing with large spans.

Talented architects,  plan from a place of familiarity and exploration of existing buildings. 

They understand the contribution, of this work process (Conscious Inspiration) to their planning quality.

At the end of the process, significant architecture is created.

This blog examines the

 inspiration sources

 of contemporary architectural projects

 I put a virtual

 mirror  

 reflecting processes of

conscious and

unconscious inspiration among Architects

and you judge

 But my challenge is not over yet

If my

“mirror”

 reflects the reality correctly

Then is needed a change in architecture profession training

And I will explane

You probably noticed that the differences between

“Conscious Inspiration” and “Copy paste”

are rather vague

And there is a consensus that

 Copy-paste is disastrous for the architectural profession

–

We all know that the basis for all architectural design , is the unique site

 on which the building is built

so how can we copy buildings?

–

For that I strive to develope a responsive training method for architects

I call it the

 Conscious Inspiration Method

The “Conscious Inspiration Method” is  learning to be inspired  consciously  from existing buildings

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our designing tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality creative architecture

.

I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on 

inspiration techniques

I call them

Andy Warhol, What do you think about the “Conscious Inspiration Method”?

Sure you encounter Andy Warhol‘s famous Statement:  Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes

Apparently it will take much longer, if you make a proper use of the Conscious Inspiration Method

Here is the short story, how Andy Warhol successfully uses the “Conscious Inspiration Method” to become one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th century

“Epilogue“

Conscious inspiration’s third Step, is all about the Inspiration Source….Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant inspiration sources

JOHNS, Jasper‘s painted Bronze cans. were practically Andy Warhol’s  Inspiration Source….the Painted Bronze cans, marked a new artistic direction by depicting ordinary and recognizable objects, or “things the mind already knows,” as he has said. Yet, at the same time, he portrayed these everyday objects in a very non-representational manner, endowing them with new, often ambiguous meanings; in this sense, his work simultaneously expanded and rejected Abstract Expressionism

Conscious inspiration’s  fourth Step, is all about realizing your invention

Andy Warhol’s  individual Campbell’s soup cans paintings, were his invention, they were produced by a printmaking method—the semi-mechanized screen printing process, using a non-painterly style. Campbell’s Soup Cans’ reliance on themes from popular culture helped to usher in pop art as a major art movement in the USA

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

 13 years ago MVRDV won a world wide competition to design Berlin Voids housing project, a vertical block marking the void left by the Berlin Wall….a three-dimensional puzzle of individual apartments.

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies,highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

What is common between Le Corbusier , Kia Sportage third generation and “Conscious Inspiration”?

After I finished writing my last post ….

About Zaha Hadid and le Corbusier’s book “Toward an Architecture”

I was curious to know more about the automotive industry today.

I turned to the network to learn more about it….

–

 I came across a car, the third generation of the Kia Sportage designed in 2010 by Peter Schreyer , and recently won a number of design awards.

A calculate guess ….the third generation of the kia Sportage,was designed according to the “conscious inspiration method” ….If I may express my private opinion…. to perfection….

For you to judge….

Is the designer of the Audi TT (1998) one of “the most influential automotive design in recent time“

so he did the Audi A3, A4 and A6.

In 1993 moved to Volkswagen’s exterior design department and drew the Volkswagen’s revised Beetle…

Peter Schreyer  has been lured from Volkswagen to become Kia’s chief designer in 2006

–

The “Conscious inspiration Method” In the case of the Kia sportage, works like this….

First….It seems as if the main inspiration source was the Nissan Murano from 2005

Notice in both cars the similar design strategy, emphasizing the front three dimensional, and the oblique angle of the back side windows….

Notice also the same rare metallic orange color in both cars…. Is it just a coincidence?

It is unusual…. I browsed the web …At last years I found just one car proposed with the same color ….the  Ford Edge  from 2009

 Is the upper front grill and front flashlights of the Volkswagen sirocco the inspiration source for the front lower grill of the Kia sportage?
