The following quote, is from le Corbusier’s  book “Towards an Architecture” ,published in 1923:

Extrusion is the touchstone of architecture

It distinguishes Art from Engineering

Extrusion is free of all constraint

This is not a question of conventions, tradition, construction method or even usefulness

Extrusion is a pure creation of the spirit, it needs a plastic artist

–

Le Corbusier ,in his book Towards  an Architecture, presents to us the Pantheon‘s coffered dome  ,as an example for an extrusion’s inspiration source

The Pantheon was built during the reign of Augustus in Rome ,Italy

Years after the Pantheon was built

The renowned architect ,Carlo Scarpa, was inspired by the coffered dome of the Pantheon

Andy Warhol, What do you think about the “Conscious Inspiration Method”?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 3, 2013 by eliinbar

Sure you encounter Andy Warhol‘s famous Statement:  Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes

Apparently it will take much longer, if you make a proper use of the Conscious Inspiration Method

Here is the short story, how Andy Warhol successfully uses the “Conscious Inspiration Method” to become one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th century

The next image is One of 32 Campbell’s soup cans Andy Warhol produced in 1961

for his breakthrough exhibition in 1962

The next image is One of 32 Campbell's soup cans Andy Warhol produced in 1961 for his breakthrough exhibition in 1962.

The individual paintings were produced by a  printmaking  method

the semi-mechanized screen printing process, using a non painterly style

And this is the sculpture created by American artist Jasper Johns in 1960 two years before before Andy Warhol introduced Campbell’s Soup 32 Cans

Apparently Andy Warhol is not the first one who was aided by the Conscious Inspiration Method

The next painting was made by Claude Gelle’e a 17th-century painter

Epilogue

Conscious inspiration’s third Step, is all about the Inspiration Source….Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant inspiration sources

JOHNS, Jasper‘s painted Bronze cans. were practically Andy Warhol’s  Inspiration Source….the Painted Bronze cans, marked a new artistic direction by depicting ordinary and recognizable objects, or “things the mind already knows,” as he has said. Yet, at the same time, he portrayed these everyday objects in a very non-representational manner, endowing them with new, often ambiguous meanings; in this sense, his work simultaneously expanded and rejected Abstract Expressionism

Conscious inspiration’s  fourth Step, is all about realizing your invention

Andy Warhol’s  individual Campbell’s soup cans paintings, were his invention, they were produced by a printmaking method—the semi-mechanized screen printing process, using a non-painterly style. Campbell’s Soup Cans’ reliance on themes from popular culture helped to usher in pop art as a major art movement in the USA

I am proud to announce the opening of my new

Inspiration Sketch Gallery (ISG)

You are invited to visit the gallery and to enjoy my sketches .

Here is a very short video that my youngest son photographed, my daughter edited and the eldest son chose the background music, documenting , the preparation process of a sketch.

They called it “ Sketch is born

Note that you see the video from the viewpoint of my eyes, How did they do it?

Recently I found a Rem Koolhaas twitt related to the Questions I raise in this blog….

Influence is a very unpleasant subject and I deal with it in a maybe irresponsible way, which is to really ignore it.”

Well…. Rem Koolhaas is no doubt one of the influential architects in our time….

Are the Max Reinhardts Haus project designed by Peter Eisenman and the “Arche de la Defense France” designed by Johann Otto von Spreckelsen shown in the next images ….Were OMA and REM KOOLHAAS  inspiration source when they designed the Central Chinese TV Building?

Let’s check if those buildings are more the type of “CONSCIOUS INSPIRATION” or the type of “COPY PASTE”….

Buildings designed according to the principles of “Conscious Inspiration“, are  identified  by means of three principles:

1. You can easily identify the sources of knowledge.

2. There is a clear expression of unique planning tools = ”Codex Rolls”.

3. Stands out, the architect’s Invention.

The  “Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

In this post we will learn about MVRDV’s Inspiration sources …. Or maybe it’s a “self fulfilling prophecy”….

For you to judge….

In the next image a building designed by Rem Koolhaas in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996 .

The building is designed according to the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”

Rem Koolhaas & OMA Architects

The Hyperbuilding , A self-contained city for 120,000 inhabitants with housing, education, culture, welfare, medical facilities, amusement, industry, retail .

 Bangkok, Thailand  1996

How does the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” works?

First step: definition of size and shape of the spaces in accordance with the program.

Second step: designing the building as a “stacking Diagram” emphasizing the program.

I can estimate

that the Berlin Voids housing project designed by MVRDV in early 90s is the source of inspiration for the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”?

–

Well…Is MVRDV’s Berlin Voids housing project designed in the 90’s is MVRDV’s “self fulfilling prophecy“?

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies, highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

–

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

What is common between Le Corbusier , Kia Sportage third generation and “Conscious Inspiration”?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 16, 2012 by eliinbar

After I finished writing my last post ….

About Zaha Hadid and le Corbusier’s book “Toward an Architecture”

I was curious to know more about the automotive industry today.

I turned to the network to learn more about it….

I came across a car, the third generation of the Kia Sportage designed in 2010 by Peter Schreyer , and recently won a number of design awards.

A calculate guess ….the third generation of the kia Sportage, was designed according to the “conscious inspiration method” ….If I may express my private opinion…. to perfection….

For you to judge….

Peter Schreyer

Is the designer of the Audi TT (1998) one of “the most influential automotive design in recent time

so he did the Audi A3, A4 and A6.

In 1993 moved to Volkswagen’s exterior design department and drew the Volkswagen’s revised Beetle

Peter Schreyer  has been lured from Volkswagen to become Kia’s chief designer in 2006

This is the  Kia Sportage designed by Peter Schreyer

Peter Schreyer

Chief Design Officer at Kia Motors

kia Sportage Third generation  2010

Do the cars shown in the next images….are Peter Schreyer’s  inspiration sources for the kia Sportage Third generation?

The “Conscious inspiration Method” In the case of the Kia sportage, works like this….

First….It seems as if the main inspiration source was the Nissan Murano from 2005

Nissan Murano 2005

Notice in both cars the similar design strategy, emphasizing the front three dimensional, and the oblique angle of the back side windows….

Notice also the same rare metallic orange color in both cars…. Is it just a coincidence?

It is unusual…. I browsed the web …At last years I found just one car proposed with the same color ….the  Ford Edge  from 2009

Now let’s go in to details….

look at the next image of the Volkswagen sirocco 2009

Is the upper front grill and front flashlights of the Volkswagen sirocco the inspiration source for the front lower grill of the Kia sportage

 Volkswagen sirocco 2009

Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012Volkswagen sirocco 2009 and the Kia Sportage’s inspiration sources

And the next car is the Mitsubishi Outlander 2006

Notice the unique shape of the Mitsubishi Outlander’s 2006 side window

Do you notice any formal similarity to the Kia shportage side window?

(Look also at the image of the Nissan Murano above)

And what do you say about the similarity of the front flashlights

pulled back like tiger eyes?

Eliinbar’s sketches 2012  Mitsubishi outlander 2006 and Kia sportage’s inspiration sources

If you are interested…. there are more cars that probably can be the inspiration sources for the kia sportage, third generation

Check the Ford Edge 2009 front flashlights, and the rare of the Volkswagen Tiguan 2009

Enjoy….

Epilog

If we look deeply , there are signs for the “conscious inspiration chain

The Nissan Murano came first in 2005….then in 2006 came the Mitsubishi Outlander  and finally the kia sportage third generation in 2010….

What do you say?

Recently I had the occasion to visit with my younger son ,who is a big fond of cars…. the motor show in Geneva.

Here is a short story about “conscious Inspiration” in the motor industry….

The source of pride and identify in the car industry, is each firm unique front grill.

Most of you probably recognize the BMW’s cars front unique grill, shown in the picture below?

Here is a picture of the Aston Martin DB5 (1963) front grill.

Now 46 years later (2010) Aston Martin Presents the model of the new Aston Martin Rapide .shown in the next image

And this is the new design for the Ford‘s next-generation Mondeo 2013

Look at both cars front grill ….Do you see the not so “Conscious Inspiration effect”?

And to make the story complete….,
Here are some more examples of cars who get their inspiration from the Aston Martin DB5 (1963
