Today post presents for the first time, my New “Conscious Inspiration” project

Buildings that will be published in ARCHDAILY in the following weeks, will be judged by the Followers of  SOMEONE  HAS  BUILT IT  BEFORE , from this  point of view

Is the  building published in ARCHDAILY, designed according to the principals of Conscious Inspiration

Or maybe by accident, it is a victim of the “Copy Past” syndrom

And todays building ,Is the SUPSI Campus Project ,designed by a well respected architect ,Kengo Kuma and Associates, published in ARCHDAILY In 20.3.2013, shown in the next image

Kengo Kuma and Associates SUPSI Campus, published in ARCHDAILY In 20.3.2013

Kengo Kuma and Associates

SUPSI Campus

published in ARCHDAILY In 20.3.2013

On first sight ,Kengo Kuma‘s building external appearance indicates that a critical source of inspiration was a  group of buildings I call them  Extroverted Buildings = buildings that Invite  the  public to climb on  them

The Extroverted Buildings trend is gaining momentum in recent years

One of the firms, that lead this trend ,is the Bjark Ingels Group – BIG

Here is a sketch that show some of Bjark Ingels (BIG) recent Extroverted Buildings

From Eliinbar's Sketchbook 2012- Bjark Ingels and the extroverted buildings trend.

What are the inspirations Sources for the Extroverted buildings trend

….I can think about three dominant sources of inspiration for the Extroverted buildings trend

1.

In this post I will examine the “Extroverted buildings trend” = (buildings that Invite us to climb on them )

What are the inspirations Sources for the “Extroverted buildings trend”?

I can think about three dominant sources of inspiration for the “Extroverted buildings trend”.

1.The Pyramid  El Castillo in Chichen Itzan  Mexico ,built between 9th and 12th centuries.

2. Snohetta’s Oslo Opera House Norway 2003-2007.

3. BIG’s , Bjarke Ingels Group Danish Pavilion ,Shanghai Expo 2010.

Each one of them has a different role in generating the “Extroverted buildings trend”.

Inspiration” or “Copy Paste” are the most dominant phenomenon of the 21st century among architects.

Most likely the “availability of information” enables the existence of the phenomenon.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all…. I present it every week in my blog, accompanied by my explanation sketches, we saw more than once, the differences between “Conscious Inspiration” and “copy paste” are not so big….

And that is exactly what I clarify in my blog.

I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on inspiration techniques ….I call them “Codex Rules”.

I strive to develop a method.

A method that will help architects and designers to cope with this phenomenon, At this point in time, I call it the “Conscious Inspiration Method” ….

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

The Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step: “knowledge”, as many said and wrote before; knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis.

Second step:   develop your personal Conscious Inspiration tools=“Codex Rules”.

Third step: the inspiration Source. (Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings).

Step Fourrealize your design idea (your invention).

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

In this post we will learn about MVRDV’s Inspiration sources …. Or maybe it’s a “self fulfilling prophecy”….

For you to judge….

In the next image a building designed by Rem Koolhaas in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996 .

The building is designed according to the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”

Rem Koolhaas & OMA Architects

The Hyperbuilding , A self-contained city for 120,000 inhabitants with housing, education, culture, welfare, medical facilities, amusement, industry, retail .

 Bangkok, Thailand  1996

How does the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” works?

First step: definition of size and shape of the spaces in accordance with the program.

Second step: designing the building as a “stacking Diagram” emphasizing the program.

 Just a Minute….

13 years ago MVRDV won a world wide competition to design Berlin Voids housing project, a vertical block marking the void left by the Berlin Wall….a three-dimensional puzzle of individual apartments.

I can estimate

that the Berlin Voids housing project designed by MVRDV in early 90s is the source of inspiration for the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”?

–

Well…Is MVRDV’s Berlin Voids housing project designed in the 90’s is MVRDV’s “self fulfilling prophecy“?

MVRDV Architects

vertical city, Jakarta, Indonesia

Published 2012

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies, highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

–

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

The  “Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Bjarke Ingels’s “Multiplying architecture strategy”,or In other words ….the “Self inspiration strategy”…. . can we consider it as”Conscious Inspiration”?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 24, 2012 by eliinbar

From  eliinbar’s sketch book 2012  Bjarke Ingels’s “Multiplying architecture strategy”

I often get the impression that there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or“Self inspiration”)

I was taught as a young architect, that architecture is distinguished from other design professions, because of its hard connection to a specific place ….

So how it becomes that the “Multiplying architecture strategy” or the “Self inspiration strategy”…. flourishes among the most talented architects working today?

Let’s start our short journey with two Bjarke Ingels’s examples

What did I learn from this post?

Your own project can be your inspiration source .

Practically your design process is your inspiration source….

I can even suggest a name for this design process -“Conscious Inspiration

Bjarke Ingels ,Zaha Hadid and SANAA are getting inspired Consciously from Steven Holl’s “Sponge Concept”.

It seems as if  Steven Holl’s exterior design, was inspired by the “Menger sponge”….Notice the largest square openings in the center of each facade.

One Year later Steven Holl designed the Simmons Hall and implemented his “Sponge Concept” design strategy ….

Note the vertical shapeless spaces in Steven Holl’s sketch, colored in white.

A reasonable assumption ….Steve Holl’s inspiration source is

The unique structure of a “sponge”

From eliinbar’s sketchbook 2012, SANAA and the “Shifted Buildings Trend”

Just unbelievable….

On a regular basis I introduced in this blog, a variety of “Conscious Inspiration” examples.

This time,  I came across the ultimate example of the “Conscious inspiration building”……

or maybe not….

For you to judge….

The next building undoubtedly is an honorary member in the privileges group of the “Shifted buildings”

 Saraiva & Associados Arquitectura Urbanismo

proposal  for the Two Towers project

competition in China 2011

for more information visit  ARCHDAILY.COM

The  Saraiva & Associados Arquitectura Urbanismo’s  proposal  for the Two Towers project  has a Typology that is  identified  with the “Shifted Buildings Trend

For more information and a lot of examples for the ” Shifted Buildings” see my next sketch , and visit my previous post “Typology of Shifted Buildings  – “Conscious Inspiration

from  eliinbar’s sketchbook 2010  SANAA and the  “Shifted Buildings Trend”

A calculate guess …. Like most of the Shifted buildings

Probably Saraiva & Associados Arquitectura Urbanismo  are inspired by the SANAA’s very familiar Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York ….shown in the next image.

SANAA Architects

Museum of Contemporary Art

New York City 2002– 2007

For more information visit  ARCHDAILY.COM

Now lets See the next clip….this is a clip representing

 Saraiva & Associados Arquitectura Urbanismo’s  design strategies….

Does It seems familiar? ….Did you recognize the architect’s design strategies?

Well… Saraiva & Associados Arquitectura Urbanismo’s  design strategies, look  in the video clip exactly like  BIG’s Augmented reality design strategy

For more information about BIG’s “Augmented reality design strategy” (emphasizing the building’s morphology planning given the weather conditionslooks at the viewtraffic systems, etc.) see  my next sketch, and visit my previous post “Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG….how they do it?”

A warm recommendation…. Locate presentations showing  BIG’s “Augmented reality design strategy”  in YouTube

Here is one I like ….

From eliinbar’s sketchbook 2012 , BIG’s architects “Augmented reality design strategy

What did I learn from this post?

Architects have varied inspiration Sources ….

The first type of inspiration is basic and common ….I call it the “Visual Inspiration” Easy to identify, and characterized by architectural trends.  (Like the “Shifted buildings” trend)

The second type of inspiration is based on research…. I call it the “Design Strategy Inspiration”. It requires knowledge and analytical skills. (Like BIG’s architects “Augmented reality design strategy”)

Recently, colleagues encouraged me to publish a “very small book”, With a collection of common planning strategies, explained through my sketches….

What do you think about it?

Shifted Buildings Trend

Believe me,  there are much more….

Rem Koolhaas the inspirational “spiritual father”….

In this Post we will see….  “Conscious Inspiration” exists at  best “families”

This is the “Conscious Inspiration” short story of two OMA’s graduates: BIG (Bjarke Ingels) and REX (Joshua Prince-Ramus)

 –

Like in all good families there are mutual influences….

Look at the buildings designed lately by REX and BIG architects in Seoul City , shown in the next images

for you to judge….

Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012 – BIG’s & REX’s “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”….

It is noticeable for the observer…. most likely, BIG’s and REX’s  source of  inspiration is the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” developed by the “spiritual fatherRem Koolhaas….but they do it”consciously

What do I mean by doing it “consciously”?

The “Conscious Inspiration Method”  is about bringing something of your self.

REX for example, morphologically gets inspired from theStacking Diagram design Strategy but they add their own Interpretation….They design large inner courtyard garden that apartments will overlook it from within the tower’s upper storeys.

For more information about REX’s  Project R6 go to DEZEEN.COM

You are invited to visit my relevant post, Rem-Koolhaas-they-were-all-my-sons: BIG, MVRDV,REX,FREE-and learn more about the“Inspiration Sources” of BIG and REX  and the “stacking Diagram design Strategy .

This is an Eliinbar’s sketch  from the “stacking Diagram design Strategy post….On the left, a project designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV for the “Berlin Voids competition”, on the right REX’s Museum Plaza …….

Are MVRDV’s “Berlin Voids competition” the inspiration origins of the “stacking Diagram design Strategy”?

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

In my previous posts I published numerous “Design Strategies” = “TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules”, of talent and well known architects

You are invited to visit my previous posts and learn more about  ”Codex rules” of leading architects like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Morphosis and others….

 –

Here is a short list of my previous posts , Presenting the “Design Strategies” = TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules” of leading architects

1. Zaha Hadid & Frank Lloyd Wright ….Do aspirations for reality begins in our drawings?

What do say about gathering all the leading architects “Codex rules” ,in a “very small book”?

BIG- Bjarke Ingels’s Group “Mountain Strategy” or the strategy of the“Self inspiration”

From  Eliinbar’s sketch book  2012– BIG’s “Mountain Strategy”

Inspiration sketch Gallery (ISG) by Eli Inbar

Thanks to “A Daily Dose of Architecture “who was my inspiration for this post

I introduced in previous Posts of mine, the possibility that gifted architects multiply their architecture designs …. for example :  SANAA multiplying architecture consciously or Daniel Libeskind Cristal Buildings.

In this post I will show some examples of Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG’s, “Self inspiration” .

Mountain Strategy” = Buildings with dominant mountain morphology

I am aware that the “Mountain Strategy” is a morphology used by other architects….

Usually been used by other architects to:

1. Increase The exposure of the building to a unique view (It is common in hotels located next to the sea)

2. Increase the exposure of the building to solar radiation (Common in cold northern countries)

3. Increase the number of terraces that are attached to apartments. (Common in Mediterranean countries)

And more ….

As I showed in  previous  post of mine

BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group

is a master in applying the  “Conscious inspiration method

For example…. BIG designed the “Amagerforbraending  Waste Treatment Plant” according to their very common “Mountain Strategy” ,but they added a twist ….they took advantage of the slope  …. and made use of it as a ski run …. (See The Amagerforbraending  Waste Treatment Plant shown in the next image)

The Amagerforbraending Waste Treatment Plant  is a good example , representing  a building designed according to  the “Conscious inspiration method”…

For you to judge….

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

“Tools” develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

Invention”: with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously  from existing building, will generate a unique design process that serves our creative desires….

Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.
