Le Corbusier and the double message of the Conscious Inspiration

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2013 by eliinbar

Here is Le Corbusier’s thought-provoking quote, published in his book “Towards Architecture“, in the early 20’s of the last century

The iron and cement  during the last fifty years brought achievements , indicating the powerful of construction, but also architecture that its code is disrupted

? What was Le corbusier‘s message when he wrote this phrase

It is possible to interpret Le corbusier’s  message literally

Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies that were developed at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century

I think Le Corbusier wanted to  send us a message bit different

:That is how I understand, le Corbusier’s message

Since its birth, the architectural bases itself on the guiding principles

These principles serves the needs of the primary users, we all

?Where do we find the guiding principles

We finde the guiding principles in existing buildings

Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies because they did not base their new designs on Inspiring buildings

Instead of learning the guiding principles that have evolved over the centuries, they choose to skip this legacy, and reinvent the wheel

This architecture does not serve us

I can suggest a name to Le corbusier’s message , I would call  it Conscious Inspiration

Here Is an interesting example , Le Corbusier has published in his book Towards Architecture

This example shows us how “Conscious Inspiration” works for Le Corbusier

Here are the four Conscious Inspiration steps, who led Corbusier to high quality and creative architecture

First step–  le Corbusier choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers his vision,  guiding principles = Outlining guidelines

002

Second step– this is one of Le Corbusier’s first buildings. le Corbusier implements consciously the principals of the “Outlining guidelines” in a building characterized by periodical architectural characteristics

018

Third step – le Corbusier develops his own personal design tools =five points of architecture / Maison Domino

022-cd3

Le Corbusir’s five points of architecture – Eliinbar sketches 2011

Fourth step- le Corbusier use his inspiration sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, he combines the tools developed and design high quality creative architecture, The building shown in the next image is a completely radical design compared to buildings which are being built at the time

Le Corbusier and Steven Holl ….once more they have shown us, consciously…. “God is in the details”

Posted in public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 19, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 ….“God is in the details”

This is a Doric Temple

Temple of Neptune at Paestum

And this is a typical Doric Column

Notice the  characteristics vertical slots

Le Corbusier in his book “Towards an Architecture” (1923) is fascinated by the small details Of the Parthenon’s Doric Columns.

Here is a quote from le Corbusier’s book “towards an architecture” ( page 178) about extrusion in Doric Columns…..in other words  “the slots”:

“We recognize the artist plastic by extrusion…. this is the place and time that the engineer is deleted, and the sculpture goes into action

Know look at the next image showing a detail from Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art

Notice the Similarity between Steven Holl’s slots, shown in the image above,, and the slots of the Doric Columns …

Notice the fundamental difference between the tow designs approaches….

The slots In the Doric Columns are vertical … and in Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art , shown in the next image  …. are Horizontal….

Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art

horizontal slots

This is a typical case of “Conscious Inspiration” ……..

Steven Holl chooses consciously to be inspired from the vertical Doric Columns’s slots ….

But he implements the slots horizontally ….

What did I learn from this post?

1. An architectural detail can be a “Source of Inspiration”.

2. “Conscious inspiration” is also the ability to copy architectural details , and by one small change ….the detail gets a new architectural meaning =“Copy with Invention”….

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”:

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that willserve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

In my previous posts I published numerous “Design Strategies” = “TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules”, of talent and well known architects

You are invited to visit my previous posts and learn more about  ”Codex rules” of leading architects like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Morphosis and others

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 –Frank Gehry and the “pile of boxes strategy”…..

Recently was published in Arch daily a mixed-use project …three “sculptural” residential towers designed by Frank Gehry .

As I showed in previous posts of mine, there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or “Self  inspiration”).

In a previous post of mine ,I showed one of the most common design strategies Frank Gehry applies in his projects…. I Call it the “pile of boxes strategy”….

It started in the 80s ….

One of the most successful buildings designed by Frank Gehry according to the “pile of boxes strategy”, is in my opinion, the public library in Hollywood, shown in the next image.

Three years later Frank Gehry designed the unique Schnabel House (shown in the next image) applying once more his “pile of boxes strategy”…..

A short Comment….

Frank Gehry’s “pile of boxes strategy” is not just a “unique morphology”, that we experience from the outside….

Frank Gehry’s strategy has other advantages….

Look at the next interior images of the Schnabel House …

The “pile of boxes strategy” is an original and exciting technique to put in the building, natural light.

What did I learn From This post?

1. Once more we saw that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” is practiced intuitively by talented architects all over the world.

2. It Seems that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” does not prejudice the creativity of architects….Perhaps even enhances It.

3. The “Conscious Inspiration Method” is not limited to a certain place, cultural or environmental conditions.

4. Inspiration Sources are varied…. architects are inspired from different periods and different places.

5. An inspiration source can be a “design strategy” or a “unique morphology”, What really matters, is the architect skills to develop and make use of his appropriate “design-tools”.

The  “Conscious Inspiration” Method,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

from Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012  Tadao Ando and the “Concentrated Facades Strategy

In my previous post

I learned about Rafael Moneo‘s and SANAA’s “Ideal Disorder Façades design strategy

In this post I will share with you another conmon façade strategy, inspired by Tadao Ando  Azuma House ….

Tadao Ando’s Azuma House in Osaka Japan, is one of the first and most Influencing buildings, planed according to the design strategy I like to Call  “Concentrated Facades”.

Tadao Ando’s  Azuma House front concentrated façade, is shown in the next image

Tadao Ando

This is the main entrance from the street to the Azuma House .

Note that the only opening at the main facade, is the door….

What are the origins of this strategy?

For what are “Concentrated Facades” good for?

Look at the next images showing talented Architects applying the “Concentrated Facades Strategy

 Is it just a trend?

Well, opposed to other “trends” presented in previous posts of mine….

In this post I will show examples of talented Architects that are getting inspired from the visual aspect of the “Concentrated Facades” strategy

But they all add their own invention to it ….

And this is basically the main essence of the “conscious inspiration method

Here are some examples of talented architects ,that implement the”Concentrated Facades” strategy consciously.

Rafael Moneo

Another feature…. Carlos Ferrater frequently makes use of is the concentration openings to facilitate prefabricated construction, characteristic mainly in residential projects.

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

Here is the short story of a brilliant architecture firm, DCPP Arquitectos, that are not intimidated to be inspired from “relevant buildings”.

First let’s see what were the “relevant buildings”, that were DCPP Arquitectos’s inspiration sources, when designing the Green Tower.

 For you to judge….

These days it’s Trendy to speak about sustainable architecture – or in its more familiar name ….GREEN buildings.

Some of the GREEN buildings put a “green button” on their facades….Combine energy-guzzling expensive machines doing miracles and wonders with waste, water, etc.

Other buildings…….. like the GREEN Tower proposed for Lima, Peru, by Mexican studio DCPP Arquitectos choose to deal with the challenge of designing a green building, using “conservative” design strategies inspired by Le Corbusier.

You are invited to visit my post  and learn more about Le Corbusier’s ”grille climatique“. (A climate systematic analysis he developed in the 50s)

Here are some of le Corbusier’s sketches representing his “conservative” design- strategies principles, to design GREEN buildings.

The sketches were made from 1950 to 1965  for Chandigarh, India.

The Original sketches are from the FONDATION LE CORBUSIER

Are Le Corbusier’s Green Buildings strategy, the inspiration sources for DCPP Arquitectos’s  Green Tower?

 for you to judge

This is Le corbusier’s sketch showing his GREEN buildings strategy

Notice the cross ventilation that becomes possible because of the horizontal openings in the building envelope

See the next image…. And this is how DCPP Arquitectos do it in the GREEN Tower

Notice the large horizontal openings that Allow cross ventilation

And this is Le corbusier’s second sketch showing his GREEN buildings strategy

Notice the Open spaces surrounding the building with vegetation.

13th Venice Architecture Biennale….FAT’s “Museum of Copying”…. Why not call it the “Conscious Inspiration museum”?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 3, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – “FAT” – getting inspired Consciously

FAT Architects presents this year The “Museum of Copying”, at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

Here is a short description from FAT’s  site:

“Invited by David Chipperfield, director of the 13th International Architecture Biennale, FAT has contributed an exhibition to the Arsenale titled the “Museum of Copying.  The “Museum of Copying” explores the idea of the copy in architecture as an important, positive and often surreal phenomenon”

And this is an interesting Sam Jacob ‘s quote, a director of “FAT” architects, published  as a background for FAT’s  exhibition in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

We hope to extend this history and explore how copying something is, strangely, a way of  inventing new forms of architecture.

Sam Jacob’s phrase, gave me an interest to learn more about FAT’s  inspiration sources….You already know my approach ….I prefer not to make use of the term “copy”….I strive to a planning process. I call “Conscious Inspiration”….

Lets check how it works for FAT ….Here is an example for you to judge….

Robert Venturi Architect

Vanna Venturi House

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.  1961-1964

FAT Architects

 BBC Studios Roath Basin Cardiff

Notice the formal statement in Venturi’s  and FAT’s projects….The dominant form of a gable, as a way to express a unique aesthetic .

Notice also the strategy of “having a wall in front of the windows” inspired probably by Charles Moore’s & Turnbull’s U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club shown in the next image….

Charles Moore & Turnbull

I want to thank “I Like Architecture and Architecture Likes Me

Dow Kimbrell’s post about  Kahn + Stella = Moore was my inspiration source.

Here are some relevant quotes from an interview with John Wesley Cooke and Heinrich Klotz reprinted in the recent anthology You Have to Pay for the Public Life , Moore described U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club ,design-process, this way:

“The front wall of the club, which faces the lagoon, is partially the result of a controversy with the campus architect, Charles Luckman. When he saw our building, he said is was unacceptable, that it looked terrible, didn’t look like his stuff, and had to have a bris-soleil. He thought that would cause us to put a screen over it which would hide this awful building which we had done, and he wouldn’t have to worry about it any more. It swept over me in the middle of the night, that all we have to do is have another wall in front of our opening, with other holes in it. Thanks to Charles Luckman, then came our first free standing walls.”

Louis Kahn is right there from the beginning in the Santa Barbara Faculty Club walls, which are a dead steal from Kahn’s Luanda consulate in Angola, which was very carefully worked out by him. There, he developed the idea of having white wall in front of the windows, screen shield walls, as you call them, The were bright but not so bright as the sky, so you could look out a window and see an intermediately bright surface which broke the glare. Ever since Kahn described that to me and others, in the late 1950′s, we had been waiting to use it. It is of great importance to play with the light in such a way that it is possible to look out of a window without it being simply a glaring hole. In the Santa Barbara situation, it got to be interesting in terms of shapes. I thought it would be fun, too.” (p. 189)

“EPILOG”

How can we summarize this post?

 Did we saw  “copying Architecture”?….

Definitely not…..We saw a perfect process that includes all the characteristics components of the “conscious Inspiration Method”

“Conscious Inspiration” – to be inspired consciously….

Bjarke Ingels’s “Multiplying architecture strategy”,or In other words ….the “Self inspiration strategy”…. . can we consider it as”Conscious Inspiration”?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 24, 2012 by eliinbar

From  eliinbar’s sketch book 2012  Bjarke Ingels’s “Multiplying architecture strategy”

I often get the impression that there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or“Self inspiration”)

I was taught as a young architect, that architecture is distinguished from other design professions, because of its hard connection to a specific place ….

So how it becomes that the “Multiplying architecture strategy” or the “Self inspiration strategy”…. flourishes among the most talented architects working today?

Let’s start our short journey with two Bjarke Ingels’s examples

For you to Judge….

What did I learn from this post?

Your own project can be your inspiration source .

Practically your design process is your inspiration source….

I can even suggest a name for this design process -“Conscious Inspiration

Bjarke Ingels ,Zaha Hadid and SANAA are getting inspired Consciously from Steven Holl’s “Sponge Concept”.

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 20, 2012 by eliinbar

From  eliinbar’s sketch book 2010 – The evolution of the Steven Holl’s “Sponge Concept”

Somewhere in the 90’, Steven Holl studied a new morphological design notion…..The “Menger Sponge”

The next image is a concept model showing the ““Menger Sponge

And this is  Steven Holl’s  Sarphatistraat offices

It seems as if  Steven Holl’s exterior design, was inspired by the “Menger sponge”….Notice the largest square openings in the center of each facade.

One Year later Steven Holl designed the Simmons Hall and implemented his “Sponge Concept” design strategy ….

Steven Holl’s Sketch showing a typical Simmons hall’s vertical section 1999-2002

Note the vertical shapeless spaces in Steven Holl’s sketch, colored in white.

A reasonable assumption ….Steve Holl’s inspiration source is

The unique structure of a “sponge”

And the next image, is Steven Holl‘s Simmons hall in MIT Cambridge USA 1999-2002

Notice the inspiration effect of the “Menger Sponge” on Steven Holl’s Facades..

Notice also the external expression of the “sponge Concept “…. the “amoeba shaped” openings.

                                                       –

Two years later Steven Holl designed a building for Nanning ,China  and once more he implements the “Sponge Concept” design strategy ….

Well ….is this a “Sponge Building” or not?

And this is Zaha Hadid’s King Abdullah II House of Culture and Art , inspired by the “Sponge Concept”design strategy
