Le Corbusier and the double message of the Conscious Inspiration

Here is Le Corbusier’s thought-provoking quote, published in his book “Towards Architecture“, in the early 20’s of the last century

The iron and cement  during the last fifty years brought achievements , indicating the powerful of construction, but also architecture that its code is disrupted

? What was Le corbusier‘s message when he wrote this phrase

It is possible to interpret Le corbusier’s  message literally

Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies that were developed at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century

–

I think Le Corbusier wanted to  send us a message bit different

–

:That is how I understand, le Corbusier’s message 

 Since its birth, the architectural bases itself on the guiding principles

    These principles serves the needs of the primary users, we all

?Where do we find the guiding principles

We finde the guiding principles in existing buildings

 Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies because they did not base their new designs on Inspiring buildings

 Instead of learning the guiding principles that have evolved over the centuries, they choose to skip this legacy, and reinvent the wheel

 This architecture does not serve us

 I can suggest a name to Le corbusier’s message , I would call  it Conscious Inspiration

This example shows us how “Conscious Inspiration” works for Le Corbusier

Here are the four Conscious Inspiration steps, who led Corbusier to high quality and creative architecture

First step–  le Corbusier choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers his vision,  guiding principles = Outlining guidelines

Second step– this is one of Le Corbusier’s first buildings. le Corbusier implements consciously the principals of the “Outlining guidelines” in a building characterized by periodical architectural characteristics

Third step – le Corbusier develops his own personal design tools =five points of architecture / Maison Domino

Fourth step- le Corbusier use his inspiration sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, he combines the tools developed and design high quality creative architecture, The building shown in the next image is a completely radical design compared to buildings which are being built at the time

Rem Koolhaas and the power of architectural sketches….

Architects are holding in their hands a powerful design tool…. their sketches.

The “conscious inspiration Method” Encourages architects to develop design tools that match their skills and desire.

Here is an intriguing example….

A leading architect, Rem KoolHaas ,adopts Mendelson’s (1887 -1953) Expressionist sketches and use them as a powerful design tool .

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

 I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

 I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”: as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”: develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…tools that encourage your planning process….tools matching your skills and generating your creative process….

(You are invited to visit earlier posts of mine showing leading architects tools…. )

“Invention”: with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings. Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG….how they do it?

In my last post I tried to find out if  BIG’s architecture is based on the principles of “conscious inspiration”.

In this post I will elaborate this issue through the following example….

–

In 2003 Snohetta Architects designed the Oslo Opera House shown in the next image.

A building with unique architectural characteristic.

A Kind of a new experience….a building that’s simply allows people to enjoy walking on it….

From 2010 to 2011 BIG Architects designed three unique buildings.

Buildings that’s allow people to enjoy their  morphology…. For purposes Such as skiing on the roof slope of the Amagerforbraending – waste treatment plant, or Cycling on the Curved roofs of the Danish-Pavilion in Shanghai Expo-2010. (these buildings are shown in the next images)

Their guiding design principle, I guess, is inspired consciously from the Snohetta’s Oslo Opera House .

BIG are not intimidated to get inspired from Snohetta’s Oslo Opera House. Once they develop their dsign tools, it leads them to high quality and creative architecture.

–

I often mention the need for developing design tools as an important stage in our planning strategy….

I call  this strategy …. the “Augmented reality strategy”

In other words emphasizing the building’s morphology planning given the weather conditions, looks at the view, traffic systems, etc.

Learning from Frank Gehry ….Chapter 1 ,His Design Tools

What can we learn from Gehry’s design Process? 

He stars His design by scribbling a sketch that expresses the image of the building. (In the Disney’s Concert Hall his inspiration Sources were sails) 

Gehry’s Quote: ( from artquotes.net)

“I know I draw without taking my pen off the page. I just keep going, and that my drawings I think of them as scribbles. I don’t think they mean anything to anybody except to me, and then at the end of the day, the end of the project they wheel out these little drawings and they’re damn close to what the finished building is and it’s the drawing”

He continues developing the “Image of the building” with the aide of Models (Notice the amount of models in the back of the picture).

The result of the design process is a Sculptural building . with an efficient floor plan. (Notice  the optimal match Configuration of the ground-floor to a concert hall)

What did I learn from Gehry’s design Process? 

1. Don’t be afraid to put your ideas on the paper  “Just do it”.. In later stages  of the planning ,you will notice the Influence of the sketches on  your design.. (Gehry’s preliminary sketches). 

2. Develop tools to analyze and “understand” how to realize your preliminary sketches (Gehry’s working models).

3. The “floor Plan” is an efficient tool to preserve the building’s initial “needs”
