Todays  post presents for the eighth time, my “Conscious Inspiration” project…. 100 Conscious projects in 200 days

100projects in 200 days that we can easily identify their Inspiration sources

These projects are published in ARCHDAILY ,the world’s most visited architecture website

The inspiration sources for the 100 projects ,are not nature in full bloom ,or wonderful music, not exciting prose

Their inspiration sources are ,existing buildings

Existing  buildings , that we are exposed to in countless websites, design brochures and  books ,everybody  is talking about this phenomenon these days , it is  called The availability of information

This is Steven Holl’s Sliced Porosity Block project In  Chengdu, Sichuan ,China 2007-2012

Notice  Steven Holl’s  scale strategy

The irregular shape of the towers, the openings and the changes in scale, add a sense of human proportions and individuality to the huge mass of the buildings

The dominant regular grid of the façade, accentuated by dominant expression of the diagonal reinforcement beams , reinforce the sense of human scale

significant architecture

Now let’s examine QLAB architects design strategy, as reflected in the NTFSH Gymnasium Published in Archdaily 26 MAY 2013 ,and shown in the next image

QLAB’s NTFSH Gymnasium is characterized by a basic morphological box with A dominant regular grid on the façade, accentuated by diagonal reinforcement beams

Does the NTFSH Gymnasium  represents the principles of Conscious Inspiration

My personal opinion…. not enough

From Eliinbar's Sketchbook 2013 "If You're Gonna Do It, Do It Right"

From  Eliinbar Sketchbook 2013  “If You’re Gonna Do It, Do It Right

While  Steven Hall’s “Sliced Porosity Block” is characterized by openings and changes in scale, that add a sense of human proportions and individuality , QLAB’s NTFSH Gymnasium ,is characterized by a basic morphological box

The effort expended on the NTFSH Gymnasium’s façades, is relevant?

This short story begins in the 60s when the architectural firm Skidmore Owings and Merill (SOM) designed the John Hancock Center building in Chicago Illinois

Note the prominent characteristic of this building , It reveals the structural system on the outside

There are constructive reasons why the structure beams are integrated in the envelope of the building, but it is noticeable that an architectural decision is involved here

This architectural approach has received further nicknames like

Structural Expressionist or High-tech architecture

In 1971, Piano and Rogers won the competition for the Centre Pompidou at Paris

Centre Pompidou was characterized by its exposed skeleton, and has become a global icon

Interesting to note, the Centre Pompidou unique architectural concept, did not won too many imitations

In 1985 The construction of the Bank of China Building in Hong Kong started. It was designed by architect I.M.Pei

Similar to Skidmore Owings and Meril’s design strategy, for the John Hancock Center

The next image is a building designed by Norman Foster In 1986

This external structural system was designed according to the “Hi tech” style, characteristic to Norman Foster‘s architecture

And today we have Zaha Hadid that makes a “Comeback” for the Structural Expressionist style with her new building

I would like to introduce you to Zaha Hadid‘s  Sci-Fi Miami Condo Tower

Notice Zaha hadid‘s noticeable architectural feature

From Eliinbar's Sketcbook 2013- Zaha Hadid and how "Conscious Inspiration" leads us to significant architecture

Like all buildings presented previously ,Zaha Hadid’s  new building ,reveals its structure to the outside

Zaha hadid is aware to the structural Expressionist style, you are invited to visit a previous post of mine that show it

She is inspired from it ,and reinvents it ,with her unique fingerprint

Perhaps for the first time, the nickname (“Structural Expressionist” ), that was invented for buildings that reveals their structure to the outside, is reflected appropriately in a building

Zaha Hadid’s Sci-Fi Miami Condo Tower, is a wonderful example of Conscious Inspiration …. Thank you Zaha Hadid

Today post presents for the first time, my New “Conscious Inspiration” project

Buildings that will be published in ARCHDAILY in the following weeks, will be judged by the Followers of  SOMEONE  HAS  BUILT IT  BEFORE , from this  point of view

Is the  building published in ARCHDAILY, designed according to the principals of Conscious Inspiration

Or maybe by accident, it is a victim of the “Copy Past” syndrom

And todays building ,Is the SUPSI Campus Project ,designed by a well respected architect ,Kengo Kuma and Associates, published in ARCHDAILY In 20.3.2013, shown in the next image

Kengo Kuma and Associates SUPSI Campus, published in ARCHDAILY In 20.3.2013

On first sight ,Kengo Kuma‘s building external appearance indicates that a critical source of inspiration was a  group of buildings I call them  Extroverted Buildings = buildings that Invite  the  public to climb on  them

The Extroverted Buildings trend is gaining momentum in recent years

One of the firms, that lead this trend ,is the Bjark Ingels Group – BIG

Here is a sketch that show some of Bjark Ingels (BIG) recent Extroverted Buildings

From Eliinbar's Sketchbook 2012- Bjark Ingels and the extroverted buildings trend.

?Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG….how they do it

What are the inspirations Sources for the Extroverted buildings trend

….I can think about three dominant sources of inspiration for the Extroverted buildings trend

1.

The Pyramid  El Castillo in Mexico ,built between 9th and 12th Centuries in Chichen Itza

2.

Le Corbusier’s  “Raising Ramp” , a planning component that highlighting the building’s entrance….and suggests the main traffic strategy inside the building

No one escapes from Le Corbusier’s “raising Ramp-trend” Richard Meier , Oscar Niemeyer, Snohetta, Jean Nouvel
