SANAA,SANAA,SANAA is it real? Or a conscious dream….

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , on June 6, 2012 by eliinbar

On a regular base I surf my favorites Internet architecture and design sites, to be informed….

Yesterday I ran into a common example of Conscious Inspiration…. or maybe not ….

I found this example on DEZEEN, an online magazine on architecture and design….

For you to judge….

In a previous post of mine I raised the thought that architects are getting inspired from their own designs ….they multiply their architecture consciously….

I gave the example of two of SANAA’s buildings shown in my next sketch

eliinbar Sketches 2011– “Multiplying Architecture Consciously”

I also claimed that your design process can be your inspiration source….

And as example,  I proposed Moriyama’s  typical floor plan shown in the next image, designed by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA)

As the Inspiration Source for the Moriyama house facades designed as well by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA)  in Tokyo , Japan 2005.   (Shown in the next image)

Notice the Moriyama floor plan ….spaces of various sizes in square shapes and in random order…Intriguing morphological similarity to SANAA’s Moriyama’s House facade

 –

Is Moriyama’s house typical floor planSANAA’s Inspiration source?….

Can a floor plan inspire your façade?

 –

And the next Building was published in DEZEEN in 1 June 2012

“You Tell I” … Can we ignore this phenomenon?

In my opinion, we must develop a method of teaching and training new architects, that will cope with a new reality , characterized by the availability of  information……..

I can even suggest a name for it …. the “conscious inspiration method”.

“Conscious Inspiration” – to be inspired consciously….

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:knowledgetools and invention.

Knowledge”: as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

Tools”: develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them, tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…tools that encourage your planning process….tools matching your skills and generating your creative process….

(You are invited to visit earlier posts of mine showing leading architects tools…. )

Invention”: with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings. Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

What is common between “conscious inspiration”and the car industry? Ask the manufacturers of Aston Martin, Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Lexus, Audi, Hyundai, Subaru, Opel, Mercedes, Mini cooper, Honda and who not….

Recently I had the occasion to visit with my younger son ,who is a big fond of cars…. the motor show in Geneva.

Here is a short story about “conscious Inspiration” in the motor industry….

The source of pride and identify in the car industry, is each firm unique front grill.

Most of you probably recognize the BMW’s cars front unique grill, shown in the picture below?

Here is a picture of the Aston Martin DB5 (1963) front grill.

 –

And this is ,Sean Connery, the known film actor ,next to the Aston Martin DB5 in the James Bond’s film Goldfinger, from 1964

James Bond’s movie ,Goldfinger, Made the Aston Martin DB5 famous and very much admired by James Bond’s fans and many others.

Now 46 years later (2010) Aston Martin Presents the model of the new Aston Martin Rapide .shown in the next image

–

And this is the new design for the Ford‘s next-generation Mondeo 2013

Look at both cars front grill ….Do you see the not so “Conscious Inspiration effect”?

Eliinbar sketches 2012 – Conscious Inspiration

And to make the story complete….,
Here are some more examples of cars who get their inspiration from the Aston Martin DB5 (1963

I call this inspiration phenomenon “Conscious inspiration Light”

Zaha Hadid’s “floating Inspiration”

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 16, 2012 by eliinbar

Zaha Hadid is a winner of many international competitions, theoretically influential and ground breaking.

A number of Hadid’s winning designs were initially never built. The Peak Club in Hong Kong (1983) shown in this post is one of them.

Hadid‘s Process of Exploring through Painting is Inspiring….

But what are Zaha Hadid’s Inspiration Sources?

The image shown below is Chernikhov’s  futuristic building, Demonstrating his search for the forms and images of new architecture.

It was published in his book  “Architectural Fantasies” (1925-1933)

 –

And this is Zaha Hadid’s image for the Peak Club international competitions in Hong Kong (1983)

Notice the architectural characteristic features identical in both Images

1. Hovering Rectangular volumes.

2. Floating curve.

3. Constructivists visionary power

4. Vertical cylindrical elements

Eliinbar Sketches 2012 Zaha Hadid’s “floating Inspiration”

Could it be that Chernikhov’s image, is Zaha Hadid’s Inspiration source for the Peak Club design?

For you to judge….

What did I learn from this post?

Zaha Hadid’s projects hover and float, animated by the same visionary power that marked the ground–breaking Constructivist structures that Vladimir Tatlin, El Lissitzky, Moisei Ginzburg  and Chernikhov imagined….

And for dessert….

What do you say about Zaha hadid’s MAXXI National Museum of XXI Century Arts floating structureshown in the image below ?

Can you imagine what are its origins (“Inspiration Sources”)?

Foster and Partners & Grimshaw Architects “Sophisticated spiral Inspiration”

Posted in public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , on February 2, 2012 by eliinbar

In my previous post I raised the possibility that Grimshaw’s architects Garibaldi Exhibition Building Is the inspiration source to Zaha Hadid‘s Burnham Pavilion

In this post it seems that Grimshaw’s architects switch roles….

Could it be that Grimshaw Architects took their inspiration from London City Hall designed by Foster, when planning the new Fulton Street Transit Center in New York?…….. For you to judge….

In My previous posts I introduced El Lissitzky and Yakov Chernikhov, two constructivist architects that published in their books Inspiring images of Modern and Fantasies Architecture (1923-1933)

Apparently they are the source of inspiration for other talented architects.

Here is another Interesting example of “Conscious Inspiration

First  He is not intimidated to get inspired from Iakov Chernikhov’s design.

Second  He develops tools to analyze Iakov Chernikhov’s  design and “Understand” It. (O.M. Ungers sketch-studies )

Third  He Designs high quality and creative architecture….

eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Steven Holl’s Inspiration Sources

sketches-for-baner-etzy2-copy-3-copy-copy-copy[1]

In 1923–1925 El Lissitzky proposed and developed the idea of horizontal skyscrapers

Lissitzky argued that as long as humans cannot fly, moving horizontally is natural and moving vertically is not….

Where there is not sufficient land for construction, a new plane created in the air at medium altitude should be preferred to an American- tower.

These buildings, according to Lissitzky, also provided superior insulation and ventilation for their inhabitants.

More than 80 years later (2006) Steven Holl  designe an horizontal Skyscraper. The Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China, a mixed-use building including hotel, offices, serviced apartments, and public park (2006-2009)

Epilogue:

1. In the drawing above , Steven Holl compares his horizontal skyscraper To a Typical American skyscraper.

2. I still wonder if the inspiration source for Holl’s buildings Mentioned in my sketch-book above are Actually Le Corbusier’s La Tourette Monastery….

3. I recommend everyone who is interested in the work of Holl, to read Lebbeus Woods post dealing with Steven Holl’s Horizontal Skyscraper.

Morphosis “Floor plan strategy”

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 12, 2012 by eliinbar

From eliinbar’s sketchbook 2012 Morphosis’s Floor plan strategy

Frank Gehry and the Morphosis architecture firm are Identified by their “sculptural buildings” (you are invited to sea my posts about The “Sculpted decade”)

In my previous posts  I presented Frank Gehry’s  “floor plan strategy”.

He designs  complex sculptural buildings in reasonable budgets and without compromising with their planning needs.

In this post I will show another successful “floor plan strategy”, of an important member in the prestigious group of sculpt architects….Thom Mayne  founder of Los Angeles firm Morphosis.

Below is shown,  a typical floor plan of the Sciences Building of Cooper Union college in New York designed by the Morphosis firm.

Now look at the picture below, are the square floor plan above and the building in the picture below,  the same building?

Thom Mayne founder of  Los Angeles firm Morphosis

Sciences Building of Cooper Union college

 in New York. 2009

they are basically the  same building.
the section below explains Morphosis’s “floor plan strategy”….
A building designed out from the core

A typical section of the Sciences Building of Cooper Union college in New York designed by the Morphosis firm

As Thom Mayne is cited in Arcspace.com:

We literally designed out from the core, always keeping in mind that the building should be as strong and innovative as the institution itself.”

Eliinbar sketches 2012  Morphosis’s Floor plan strategy

  –

So Morphosis “floor plan  strategy” is now clear….

1. Simple cube-shaped building with an Interior core designed by the principles of the “sponge concept” (you are invited to sea my post about Steven Holl’s “sponge concept”).

2. And a sculptural façade created by a steel screen fluctuates in its offset from the cube. (You are invited to sea my post about the three dimensional “Mashrabiya Envelopes” and some other of my relevant posts listed at the end).

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on January 9, 2012 by eliinbar

Are  Iakov Chernikhov’s, constructivist designs, the Inspiration Sources for two of the leading deconstructivist architects of the 21 century?

Iakov Chernikhov was a constructivist architect and graphic designer. He lived from 1889 to 1951.

He published books with his innovative constructivist architectural design in Leningrad between 1927 and 1933  (See the pictures below)

Epilogue

What are Constructivist teaching methods? (“Conscious Inspiration Method”)

 1. Constructivist teaching theoretical framework holds that learning always builds upon knowledge that we already know.

 2. Constructivist learning theory says that all knowledge is constructed from a base of prior knowledge.

 3. Constructivists suggest that learning is more effective when we are actively engaged in the learning process.

 4. We learn how to learn, by giving the training to take initiative from our own learning experiences.
