From time to time I come across a building that explains everything….

A building designed according to the guiding principles of “conscious inspiration

Neil M. Denari Architects in collaboration with Taiwanese architectural firm Fei and Cheng Associates are not intimidated to get inspired from “relevant buildings.

They developed their “tools”=”Codex rules”=”design Strategies”…. and it leads them to high quality and creative architecture ….

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

In my previous posts I published numerous “Design Strategies” = “TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules”, of talent and well known architects

You are invited to visit my previous posts and learn more about  ”Codex rules” of leading architects like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Morphosis and others….

 –

Here is a short list of my previous posts , Presenting the “Design Strategies” = TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules” of leading architects

Once we develop our “TOOLS”=”Codex rules”, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

from Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012  Tadao Ando and the “Concentrated Facades Strategy

In my previous post

I learned about Rafael Moneo‘s and SANAA’s “Ideal Disorder Façades design strategy

In this post I will share with you another conmon façade strategy, inspired by Tadao Ando  Azuma House ….

Tadao Ando’s Azuma House in Osaka Japan, is one of the first and most Influencing buildings, planed according to the design strategy I like to Call  “Concentrated Facades”.

Tadao Ando’s  Azuma House front concentrated façade, is shown in the next image

Tadao Ando

 Azuma House

Osaka, Japan 1975-1976

This is the main entrance from the street to the Azuma House .

Note that the only opening at the main facade, is the door….

What are the origins of this strategy?

For what are “Concentrated Facades” good for?

Look at the next images showing talented Architects applying the “Concentrated Facades Strategy

 Is it just a trend?

Well, opposed to other “trends” presented in previous posts of mine….

In this post I will show examples of talented Architects that are getting inspired from the visual aspect of the “Concentrated Facades” strategy

But they all add their own invention to it ….

And this is basically the main essence of the “conscious inspiration method

Here are some examples of talented architects ,that implement the”Concentrated Facades” strategy consciously.

Rafael Moneo

2. To emphasize the main entrance.

3. To illuminate the café with natural light.

Another feature…. Carlos Ferrater frequently makes use of is the concentration openings to facilitate prefabricated construction, characteristic mainly in residential projects.

First let’s see what were the “relevant buildings”, that were DCPP Arquitectos’s inspiration sources, when designing the Green Tower.

These days it’s Trendy to speak about sustainable architecture – or in its more familiar name ….GREEN buildings.

Some of the GREEN buildings put a “green button” on their facades….Combine energy-guzzling expensive machines doing miracles and wonders with waste, water, etc.

Other buildings…….. like the GREEN Tower proposed for Lima, Peru, by Mexican studio DCPP Arquitectos choose to deal with the challenge of designing a green building, using “conservative” design strategies inspired by Le Corbusier.

You are invited to visit my post  and learn more about Le Corbusier’s ”grille climatique“. (A climate systematic analysis he developed in the 50s)

Here are some of le Corbusier’s sketches representing his “conservative” design- strategies principles, to design GREEN buildings.

The sketches were made from 1950 to 1965  for Chandigarh, India.

The Original sketches are from the FONDATION LE CORBUSIER

Are Le Corbusier’s Green Buildings strategy, the inspiration sources for DCPP Arquitectos’s  Green Tower?

 for you to judge

This is Le corbusier’s sketch showing his GREEN buildings strategy

Notice the cross ventilation that becomes possible because of the horizontal openings in the building envelope

Rafael Moneo’s and SANAA’s “Ideal Disorder Façades” ,The most common Inspiration source today….

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 9, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Rafael Moneo’s inspiration sources

First ….let’s find out what where Moneo’s Inspiration sources to design the Murcia-Town-Hall’s unique façade….

Le Corbusier La Tourette Monastery  1953-1957

Museo de san Telmo , San Sebastian,Spain

Rafael Moneo
Murcia Town Hall
Murcia, Spain 1991-1998

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Rafael Moneo’s inspiration sources

Are La Tourette Monastery, designed by Le Corbusier and Museo de san Telmo in San Sebastian Rafael Moneo’s inspiration Sources?

Note the vertical columns at varying distances at le Corbusier’s la Tourette Monastery and the Variable scale of the openings on different levels of the Museo de san Telmo in San Sebastian, Spain.

The synthesis between the two buildings was probably Rafael Moneo’s  inspiration, when  designing Murcia Town Hall, unique front façade.

Let’s go a step further

A similar “design strategy” is quite noticeable in Moneo’s and SANAA’s buildings…. shown in the next images.

SANAA Architects

ZollvereinSchool of  Management & Design

Essen,Germany 2003-2006

Rafael Moneo
Murcia Town Hall
Murcia, Spain 1991-1998

Notice that both building facades are characteristics in their search for “ideal disorder” (Mainly expressed in the organization and rhythm of openings in the façades)

A strategy that is very common, among leading architects today….Can it be a reaction to the Classical and modernist order?

13th Venice Architecture Biennale….FAT’s “Museum of Copying”…. Why not call it the “Conscious Inspiration museum”?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 3, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – “FAT” – getting inspired Consciously

FAT Architects presents this year The “Museum of Copying”, at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

Here is a short description from FAT’s  site:

“Invited by David Chipperfield, director of the 13th International Architecture Biennale, FAT has contributed an exhibition to the Arsenale titled the “Museum of Copying.  The “Museum of Copying” explores the idea of the copy in architecture as an important, positive and often surreal phenomenon”

And this is an interesting Sam Jacob ‘s quote, a director of “FAT” architects, published  as a background for FAT’s  exhibition in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

We hope to extend this history and explore how copying something is, strangely, a way of  inventing new forms of architecture.

Sam Jacob’s phrase, gave me an interest to learn more about FAT’s  inspiration sources….You already know my approach ….I prefer not to make use of the term “copy”….I strive to a planning process. I call “Conscious Inspiration”….

Lets check how it works for FAT ….Here is an example for you to judge….

Robert Venturi Architect

Vanna Venturi House

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.  1961-1964

FAT Architects

 BBC Studios Roath Basin Cardiff

Notice the formal statement in Venturi’s  and FAT’s projects….The dominant form of a gable, as a way to express a unique aesthetic .

Notice also the strategy of “having a wall in front of the windows” inspired probably by Charles Moore’s & Turnbull’s U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club shown in the next image….

Charles Moore & Turnbull

U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club of 1966-68

I want to thank “I Like Architecture and Architecture Likes Me

Dow Kimbrell’s post about  Kahn + Stella = Moore was my inspiration source.

Here are some relevant quotes from an interview with John Wesley Cooke and Heinrich Klotz reprinted in the recent anthology You Have to Pay for the Public Life , Moore described U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club ,design-process, this way:

“The front wall of the club, which faces the lagoon, is partially the result of a controversy with the campus architect, Charles Luckman. When he saw our building, he said is was unacceptable, that it looked terrible, didn’t look like his stuff, and had to have a bris-soleil. He thought that would cause us to put a screen over it which would hide this awful building which we had done, and he wouldn’t have to worry about it any more. It swept over me in the middle of the night, that all we have to do is have another wall in front of our opening, with other holes in it. Thanks to Charles Luckman, then came our first free standing walls.”

Louis Kahn is right there from the beginning in the Santa Barbara Faculty Club walls, which are a dead steal from Kahn’s Luanda consulate in Angola, which was very carefully worked out by him. There, he developed the idea of having white wall in front of the windows, screen shield walls, as you call them, The were bright but not so bright as the sky, so you could look out a window and see an intermediately bright surface which broke the glare. Ever since Kahn described that to me and others, in the late 1950′s, we had been waiting to use it. It is of great importance to play with the light in such a way that it is possible to look out of a window without it being simply a glaring hole. In the Santa Barbara situation, it got to be interesting in terms of shapes. I thought it would be fun, too.” (p. 189)

“EPILOG”

How can we summarize this post?

 Did we saw  “copying Architecture”?….

Definitely not…..We saw a perfect process that includes all the characteristics components of the “conscious Inspiration Method”

“Conscious Inspiration” – to be inspired consciously….

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

Le Corbusier Vis Zaha Hadid…. and “Google Trends” is always right

Posted in public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 30, 2012 by eliinbar

From Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 -Le corbusier’s “Geometry” strategy

Let’s find out what was le Corbusier’s message, when he wrote in his book “Towards an Architecture” in 1923

Today’s architects are concerned from the geometric components of buildings surfaces. The great problems of the modern building age will be resolved by the “Geometry”.

This Is Le Corbusier’s  La Tourette Monastery designed and built 1953-1957

Is this building designed according to Le Corbusier’s “Geometry” strategy?

Le Corbusier Architect

What is certain ….This building was and will be a source of inspiration for many generations of architects still to come….

So what do you think?

Who is the preferred choice for inspiration to architects today?

Zaha Hadid or Le Corbusier?

The truth is hard to answer….

For that invented Google…. the “Google Trends”

 –

Google Trends  is a” Tool” to compare the world’s interest in different topics. You can see how often the topics you are interested searched on Google over time.

This is a “Google Trends” graph that compares the world’s interest in Zaha Hadid and Le Corbusier.

At least ….according to “Google Trends” Le Corbusier (in Red) takes it all….

From  eliinbar’s sketch book 2012  Bjarke Ingels’s “Multiplying architecture strategy”

I often get the impression that there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or“Self inspiration”)

I was taught as a young architect, that architecture is distinguished from other design professions, because of its hard connection to a specific place ….

So how it becomes that the “Multiplying architecture strategy” or the “Self inspiration strategy”…. flourishes among the most talented architects working today?

Zaha hadid and Le Corbusier ….Playing musical chairs….

From Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Zaha hadid and Le Corbusier Playing musical chairs

Le Corbusier wrote in his book “Towards an Architecture” in 1923 : ”Architecture is not making any Longer simple shapes

Twenty seven years later Le Corbusier designed Notre Dame du Haut chapel. A Floor plan that is characterized by complex shapes ….a style identified today with Zaha Hadid’s Architecture…..

And this is a  Zaha hadid’s  typical floor plan … Note the morphological similarity to le Corbusier’s Notre Dame du Haut chapel floor plan.

Notice the Aquatics Centre’s roof …It is supported by concrete columns that make it appear to float above the rest of the space

And this is the roof designed by Le Corbusier for the Notre Dame du Haut chapel

Notice the structural design of the roof was inspired by the engineering of airfoils.

“Epilog”:

Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre roof…. under construction

Notice the Aquatics Centre’s roof …It is supported by concrete columns that make it appear to float above the rest of the space.

Villa Adriana  was the Source of  inspiration for le corbusier, when he designed  the RonChamp Chapel  in 1950.

And the next image, are le Corbusier’s sketches from Villa Adriana

Probably Zaha Hadid’s inspiration source for the Aquatics Centre for 2012 Summer Olympics London , is  Le Corbusier’s RonChamp ,Chapel roof.

Each generation and its inspiration sources

The principle is the same…. talented architects of all times are not intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Here are two relevant examples ,of talented architects that are inspired from Le Corbusier’s RonChamp Chapel – roof. … For you to judge

The next image is Louis Kahn’s  First Unitarian Church  roof designed and built  1959-1969,  inspired from Le corbusier’s  Ron Champ Chapel .

Zaha hadid “what came first the chicken or the egg?

From Eliinbar’s sketch book  2012  – Zaha Hadid

sketches-for-baner-etzy2-copy-3-copy-copy-copy[1]

Le Corbusier in his book “Toward an Architecture”(published 1923)

Talks about the new technology, cars, airplanes, ships etc.

Le Corbusier claims that we architects need to be inspired from the functional aesthetics of vehicles, airplanes and the ships industries.

Le Corbusier Back in the 20th, was already aware to the benefits of the “Conscious inspiration method” as an intriguing and relevant planning tool for architects.

He offered us architects to get inspired from the automotive industries, planes and even from ships.

A picture from le Corbusiers’ book “Toward an Architecture1923

And this is what exactly happened In the first half of the 20th century….

Architects like Gropius, Mendelsohn,Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and others..

applied  Le Corbusier’s  “Conscious Inspiration” principles and Influenced generations of architects….

I think it’s a fascinating period in the history of architecture and I intend to elaborate this issue in the posts coming..

In this post I will check an intriguing question….

A classic case for the eternal question what came first the chicken or the egg?

Are new constructions technologies available today, are Zaha Hadid’s inspiration sources”?

Or is it  Zaha hadid’s vision that promoted new construction technologies that finally enabled realize her vision?

Here are some examples that expose construction methods used in Zaha Hadid’s  buildings

Do they enable us to answer the question I raised  previously?

For you to judge….

 Zaha Hadid Architect

Burnham Pavilion’s  aluminum-tube structure

Zaha Hadid Architect Burnham Pavilion

published in  ArchDaily  in 2010

What did I learn from this post?

I think it will be a reasonable assumption to assume that  Zaha hadid  get inspired from new building technologies.

I believe that even today the principle Le Corbusier suggested in the 20’s is still relevant….”go architects and get inspired by advanced industrial technologies” ….

And I believe that this is exactly what  Zaha Hadid  actually does ….She implements Le Corbusier’s principle….  And gets inspired consciously from advanced industrial technologies….
