A building designed according to the guiding principles of “conscious inspiration”

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

Tadao Ando and the Azuma House ….the most identified example of the “Concentrated Facade” strategy.

In my previous post  

I learned about Rafael Moneo‘s and SANAA’s “Ideal Disorder Façades design strategy”

In this post I will share with you another conmon façade strategy, inspired by Tadao Ando  Azuma House ….

Tadao Ando’s Azuma House in Osaka Japan, is one of the first and most Influencing buildings, planed according to the design strategy I like to Call  “Concentrated Facades”.

–

This is the main entrance from the street to the Azuma House .

Note that the only opening at the main facade, is the door….

 

What are the origins of this strategy?

For what are “Concentrated Facades” good for?

 Is it just a trend?

Well, opposed to other “trends” presented in previous posts of mine….

In this post I will show examples of talented Architects that are getting inspired from the visual aspect of the “Concentrated Facades” strategy

Notice the Semi-transparent façade…. It meets the specific needs of a library filtered light.

And to emphasize the main entrance of a public building, Rafael Moneo opens a large “Three-dimensional window” above it.

Bellevue Art Museum Galleries, classrooms, cafe, auditorium Bellevue

Washington inaugurated on January 2001

Notice the closed umber façades…. It meets the specific needs of Galleries and auditorium.

There are large openings in the façade, in three main areas:

1. From the Side of the roof , illuminating the galleries with  Indirect lighting.

2. To emphasize the main entrance.

3. To illuminate the café with natural light.

Carlos Ferrater

Much of Carlos Ferrater buildings are being built in hot places with a lot of solar radiation.

He is aware of that. So in many of his buildings , openings are concentrated and protected by slats.

Another feature…. Carlos Ferrater frequently makes use of is the concentration openings to facilitate prefabricated construction, characteristic mainly in residential projects.

Here is the short story of a brilliant architecture firm, DCPP Arquitectos, that are not intimidated to be inspired from “relevant buildings”.

These days it’s Trendy to speak about sustainable architecture – or in its more familiar name ….GREEN buildings.

Some of the GREEN buildings put a “green button” on their facades….Combine energy-guzzling expensive machines doing miracles and wonders with waste, water, etc. 

Other buildings…….. like the GREEN Tower proposed for Lima, Peru, by Mexican studio DCPP Arquitectos choose to deal with the challenge of designing a green building, using “conservative” design strategies inspired by Le Corbusier.

Are La Tourette Monastery, designed by Le Corbusier and Museo de san Telmo in San Sebastian Rafael Moneo’s inspiration Sources?

 Note the vertical columns at varying distances at le Corbusier’s la Tourette Monastery and the Variable scale of the openings on different levels of the Museo de san Telmo in San Sebastian, Spain. 

The synthesis between the two buildings was probably Rafael Moneo’s  inspiration, when  designing Murcia Town Hall, unique front façade.

13th Venice Architecture Biennale….FAT’s “Museum of Copying”…. Why not call it the “Conscious Inspiration museum”?

FAT Architects presents this year The “Museum of Copying”, at the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

 

Here is a short description from FAT’s  site:

“Invited by David Chipperfield, director of the 13th International Architecture Biennale, FAT has contributed an exhibition to the Arsenale titled the “Museum of Copying”.  The “Museum of Copying” explores the idea of the copy in architecture as an important, positive and often surreal phenomenon”

And this is an interesting Sam Jacob ‘s quote, a director of “FAT” architects, published  as a background for FAT’s  exhibition in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale

“We hope to extend this history and explore how copying something is, strangely, a way of  inventing new forms of architecture”.

Sam Jacob’s phrase, gave me an interest to learn more about FAT’s  inspiration sources….You already know my approach ….I prefer not to make use of the term “copy”….I strive to a planning process. I call “Conscious Inspiration”….

I want to thank “I Like Architecture and Architecture Likes Me”

Dow Kimbrell’s post about  Kahn + Stella = Moore was my inspiration source.

Here are some relevant quotes from an interview with John Wesley Cooke and Heinrich Klotz reprinted in the recent anthology You Have to Pay for the Public Life , Moore described U.C. Santa Barbara Faculty Club ,design-process, this way:

 “The front wall of the club, which faces the lagoon, is partially the result of a controversy with the campus architect, Charles Luckman. When he saw our building, he said is was unacceptable, that it looked terrible, didn’t look like his stuff, and had to have a bris-soleil. He thought that would cause us to put a screen over it which would hide this awful building which we had done, and he wouldn’t have to worry about it any more. It swept over me in the middle of the night, that all we have to do is have another wall in front of our opening, with other holes in it. Thanks to Charles Luckman, then came our first free standing walls.”

“Louis Kahn is right there from the beginning in the Santa Barbara Faculty Club walls, which are a dead steal from Kahn’s Luanda consulate in Angola, which was very carefully worked out by him. There, he developed the idea of having white wall in front of the windows, screen shield walls, as you call them, The were bright but not so bright as the sky, so you could look out a window and see an intermediately bright surface which broke the glare. Ever since Kahn described that to me and others, in the late 1950′s, we had been waiting to use it. It is of great importance to play with the light in such a way that it is possible to look out of a window without it being simply a glaring hole. In the Santa Barbara situation, it got to be interesting in terms of shapes. I thought it would be fun, too.” (p. 189)

Le Corbusier Vis Zaha Hadid…. and “Google Trends” is always right

“Today’s architects are concerned from the geometric components of buildings surfaces. The great problems of the modern building age will be resolved by the “Geometry”.

I often get the impression that there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or“Self inspiration”)

I was taught as a young architect, that architecture is distinguished from other design professions, because of its hard connection to a specific place ….

So how it becomes that the “Multiplying architecture strategy” or the “Self inspiration strategy”…. flourishes among the most talented architects working today?

Zaha hadid and Le Corbusier ….Playing musical chairs….

Le Corbusier wrote in his book “Towards an Architecture” in 1923 : ”Architecture is not making any Longer simple shapes”

Twenty seven years later Le Corbusier designed Notre Dame du Haut chapel. A Floor plan that is characterized by complex shapes ….a style identified today with Zaha Hadid’s Architecture…..

Le Corbusier in his book “Toward an Architecture”(published 1923)

Talks about the new technology, cars, airplanes, ships etc. 

Le Corbusier claims that we architects need to be inspired from the functional aesthetics of vehicles, airplanes and the ships industries. 

Le Corbusier Back in the 20th, was already aware to the benefits of the “Conscious inspiration method” as an intriguing and relevant planning tool for architects. 

He offered us architects to get inspired from the automotive industries, planes and even from ships.

And this is what exactly happened In the first half of the 20th century….

Architects like Gropius, Mendelsohn,Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and others..

applied  Le Corbusier’s  “Conscious Inspiration” principles and Influenced generations of architects….

I think it’s a fascinating period in the history of architecture and I intend to elaborate this issue in the posts coming..

A classic case for the eternal question  “what came first the chicken or the egg? 

Are new constructions technologies available today, are Zaha Hadid’s “inspiration sources”?

Or is it  Zaha hadid’s vision that promoted new construction technologies that finally enabled realize her vision?

What did I learn from this post?

I think it will be a reasonable assumption to assume that  Zaha hadid  get inspired from new building technologies.

I believe that even today the principle Le Corbusier suggested in the 20’s is still relevant….”go architects and get inspired by advanced industrial technologies” …. 

And I believe that this is exactly what  Zaha Hadid  actually does ….She implements Le Corbusier’s principle….  And gets inspired consciously from advanced industrial technologies….
