After a long break, I’m back.. Business as usual .. Nothing new under the sun.

Today’s post will be the first of a series, inquiring whether one of the leading architectural firms in the world, office of Architecture OMA led by Rem Koolhaas, is a popular Inspiration Sources among leading architects today.

Each post will introduce a building designed by  Rem Koolhaas . I will identify the building main configuration, and its origins. Then I will unfold some buildings, we can identify characteristics indicating they were influenced  by Rem Koolhaas   .

In other words,  Rem Koolhaas’s  buildings, most likely were their Inspiration Source

The Inspiration Source

This is the new De Rotterdam complex a “vertical city” in Rotterdam completed in 2013

 And this building  is Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” built in the USA in 1934 . this building is probably one of the known examples of  Shifted Buildings.

Conscious Inspiration today

This is a Museum built lately in NewYork City,designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

 Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa are partners in the Japanese architectural firm SANAA.

 SANAA has won the 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the profession’s highest honor.

SANAA received the commission of this Museum in 2002 and completion was in 2007

SANAA‘s Museum is a multi purpose buildings with an ambitious program a dramatic stack of seven rectangular boxes.

This is how Rem koolhaas describes the main  configuration of the De Rotterdam complex: “a building that consists of separate volumes that were slightly shifted vis-a-vis each other

And this is SANAA’s description for the  museum in New York: “We knew we could not maximize the entire site with solid architecture, we had to reduce the building’s mass somehow to create space between it and the perimeter. The solution of the shifted boxes arrived quickly”.

Notice that Rem Koolhaas and SANAA are using the same basic notions to describe their buildings: “shifted volumes / boxes“.

Today’s post gets a boost from two recent articles, published in ARCHDAILY

The articles explor the disturbing phenomenon of “copy-paste” in architecture

You already know my opinion on this subject

The main question is not whether to copy existing buildings

This has been a fact, which is part of our professional life

You are invited to examine hundreds of examples that reinforce this claim in my blog

Our challenge today, as I would put it

is how to get inspired consciously from existing buildings

Do not be ashame to be inspired by existing buildings, as long as you do it consciously

Certainly, this is the natural process, which architecture is going towards

?Do you realy think this post will stop with the Chongqing project

Obviously it will not finish there, because “Copy Paste” is has been a fact, which is part of our professional life

We have just seen an example from “real life“,  Zaha Hadid‘s Wangjing SOHO

But the phenomenon is much broader and complex

This is our reality, and we can not ignore it

So let’s not fight it. or forbid or even despise this phenomenon

Our duty is to develop methods and ways to “copy” properly

Or as I put it ,  to be inspired consciously

To avoid any misunderstanding , I am not talking about waking in the morning with a some kind of ready-made inspiration

To be inspired consciously is a structured process we can practice it and perfect it

I feel ready to share with you my thoughts ,how  to apply it in our professional life

In my last post, I showed the mutual inspirational relations, between the “Soviet Modernism” architecture, built in the second half of the 20th century and western architecture, built in the last two decades….

In this post, I would like to share with you some of the strange cases of conscious and unconscious inspiration…. from the “Soviet Modernism” period….

Let’s look at some of Simona Rota’s photographs….

The  “Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

 

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Inspiration, Consciousness and “copy paste”….and everything in between….

The example presented to you in this post, is a bit confusing…. 

I must admit ….At first glance, I thought this example is a typical incident of “copy-paste” 

Later on I changed my mind….

This is a new building built in Taiwan

Now look at the following Building, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 30s (1936 to 1939)

This is the Interior, “Great Workroom”, of the Johnson Wax Headquarters building.

You probably noticed the obvious morphological resemblance between the “Mushroom Pillars”,in both projects . 

Notice also the innovative system, that allowed natural light to penetrate in between the “Mushroom Pillars”.… 

Let’s find out, how to distinguish between projects that are inspired “Consciously “to” copy-paste”. 

What distinguishes “Conscious Inspiration “from “copy-paste” ? 

….When we add our Invention”.

I believe that each one of us can give a better expression to his talents by adding an Invention ….to an existing building….

Once again look at the next image of the building built in Taiwan

Now here comes the “Invention”…..

Notice the non-symmetrical shape of the”Mushroom Pillars” of the Taiwan’s building ….

 Notice also the smooth and liquid appearance of the “Mushroom Pillars’s”….Unlike the structural appearance of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax Headquarters building. ….

Also note the Ideal Disorder dispersion of the “Mushroom Pillars” in accordance with the “Ideal Disorder Design Strategy” = IDDS….

It may not be coincidentally…. the spiral tower is designed in Barcelona Spain.

Considering Spain was ruled for – in some parts – up to 800 years by the Islamic Moors.

Architect Zvi Hecker is one of the leading architects who have studied and planned Spiral  architecture….:

Zvi Hecker’s quote:  “A building is based on the precision of an idea on which variations are made. With the Spiral House, the idea itself is very simple; therefore the variations can be very complex”.
