Today’s post gets a boost from two recent articles, published in ARCHDAILY

The articles explor the disturbing phenomenon of “copy-paste” in architecture

You already know my opinion on this subject

The main question is not whether to copy existing buildings

This has been a fact, which is part of our professional life

You are invited to examine hundreds of examples that reinforce this claim in my blog

Our challenge today, as I would put it

is how to get inspired consciously from existing buildings

Do not be ashame to be inspired by existing buildings, as long as you do it consciously

Certainly, this is the natural process, which architecture is going towards

 

For the fourth time, Since I started the“Conscious Inspiration” project = 100 Conscious projects in 200 days , Here is another relevant example published in ARCHDAILY in 9 april 2013

?Do you realy think this post will stop with the Chongqing project

Obviously it will not finish there, because “Copy Paste” is has been a fact, which is part of our professional life

We have just seen an example from “real life“,  Zaha Hadid‘s Wangjing SOHO

But the phenomenon is much broader and complex

This is our reality, and we can not ignore it

So let’s not fight it. or forbid or even despise this phenomenon

Our duty is to develop methods and ways to “copy” properly

Or as I put it ,  to be inspired consciously

To avoid any misunderstanding , I am not talking about waking in the morning with a some kind of ready-made inspiration

To be inspired consciously is a structured process we can practice it and perfect it

I feel ready to share with you my thoughts ,how  to apply it in our professional life

The “twin” that was found to Zaha Hadid’s Wangjing SOHO Is not a single incident

From time to time I come across a building that explains everything

Recently been completed the construction of Zaha Hadid‘s Galaxy Soho

Beijing China

?What are the sources of inspiration for this building

 

I can think about two sources of inspiration for the Zaha Hadid‘s Galaxy Soho.

Frank Lloyd Write‘s Guggenheim Museum’s is  Zaha Hadid‘s   Source of Knowledge

.”And Foster‘s London City Hall is the “Source of Inspiration

 

Each one of them has a different role in generating Zaha Hadid‘s design for the Galaxy Soho

A “short talk” about “Conscious Inspiration”  January 2013

Inspiration” or “Copy Paste” are the most dominant phenomenon of the 21st century among architects.

Most likely , the “availability of information” enables the existence of the phenomenon.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all…. I present it every week in my blog, accompanied by my explanation sketches.

We saw more than once, differences between “Conscious Inspiration” and “copy paste” are not so big….

With this challenge, the “Conscious inspiration Method” wants to cope .

I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on inspiration techniques ….I call them “Codex Rules”.

I strive to develop a method.

A method that will help architects and designers to cope with this phenomenon, At this point in time, I call it the “Conscious Inspiration Method” ….

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality creative architecture.

The Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step: “knowledge”, as many said and wrote before; knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis.

Second step: develop Conscious Inspiration personal  tools = “Codex Rules”.

Third step: the inspiration Source. (Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings).

Step Fourrealize your design idea (your invention).

Five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method

1. How to filter out relevant knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your vision?

4. How to develop your 0wn personal design tools?

5. How to use your inspiration sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and to design high quality creative architecture?

 

Learning from Frank Gehry ….Chapter 3 – the most successful “floor plan Strategy”….

This post summarizes my “micro trilogy” about Frank Gehry’s “floor plan Strategies”

I will share with you. Gehry’s most considered building, with what I believe, the most successful “floor plan Strategy”…. The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao,Spain.

First  I will present The EMR Communication and Technology Center.

This building is a typical  example of Gehry’s characteristic “Floor plan Strategy” in the mid 90th.

I call this strategy the“Personal fan shape strategy”.

Gehry’s first  step, is to design unique morphological-forms.

Then weaves them in to a wonderful composition…. (It will be fascinating to trace Gehry’s inspiration sources when designing does unique morphological forms …. I already have some ideas I will share them with you, in my next posts).

Spain 1991-1997, is one of Gehry’s most known buildings.

The Guggenheim museum First floor plan is a characteristic example of a combination of two of Gehry’s floor plans strategies, the “Sculptural Warping Strategy” that is represented in my previous post and the “Personal fan shape strategy” shown above, By the EMR Communication and Technology Center.

What did I learn from this post?

Gehry does not give up his desire for creativity and uniqueness.

Over the years Gehry develops new floor plan Strategies (Codex rules), and implement them in his designs to realize his architectural vision.

His Strategies is directed to provide a novel and unique interpretation to the common “boxes”

Gehry’s Quate:  “Ninety-eight percent of buildings are boxes,which tells me that a lot of people are in denial. We live and work in boxes. People don’t even notice that”

Developing tools (Codex rules) is something we can learn as a method.

I can even suggest a name for this method “Conscious Inspiration”.

The Conscious Inspiration Methode:

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”= (“Codex rules”) develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.
