From Eliinbar’s Sketchbook 2012– the ” T buildings trend

It seems like a new trend is developing in recent years.

I call this trend…. The “ T Buildings trend

long ago …. when architects talk about “ T buildings”….  They were referring to buildings with a floor plan that has the shape of “T” like in the next image….

Typical “T” floor plan

In recent years, three leading architectural firms, Rem Koolhaas(OMA), MVRDV and Steven Holl, explore the “T” configuration through the facades of their buildings .

Here are some examples:

Can a floor plan be your “Inspiration source”?

Inspiration sketch Gallery (ISG) by Eli Inbar

Recently I found a Rem Koolhaas twitt  (16 Feb 09) related to the questions I raise in this blog….

Rem Koolhaas twitt: “Influence is a very unpleasant subject and I deal with it in a maybe irresponsible way, which is to really ignore it.”

Well….  Rem Koolhaas is no doubt one of the influential architects in our  time….

We learned in this blog that the notions “inspiration” and “copy- past”, In other words “Influence”…. are very delicate issues, we are obliged to recognize them and develop techniques to deal with them….

Probably you encountered in my blog ,  the Conscious Inspiration Method

A method that is aware of today availability of information…. and develop tools to help us architects and designers deal with it.

We don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired (influence) from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

The next image, is the Shenzhen Stock Exchange building in Shenzhen,China .Rem Koolhaas ( OMA) won a competition to design it in 2006, today the Shenzhen Stock Exchange is under construction.

I can sagest some “Influencing’ buildings that
may be , are the inspiration sources for Rem Koolhaas.

For you to Judge….

El Lissitzky’s proposed horizontal skyscraper 1923–1925

Tiblissi  Geórgia 1975

And for  desert….

What do you think about this building designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au  in Shenzhen, China ,  bublished in Dezeen in 2009?

Note that the Rem Koolhaas’s Shenzhen Stock Exchange  is on its left….

eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Steven Holl’s Inspiration Sources

In 1923–1925 El Lissitzky proposed and developed the idea of horizontal skyscrapers

Lissitzky argued that as long as humans cannot fly, moving horizontally is natural and moving vertically is not….

Where there is not sufficient land for construction, a new plane created in the air at medium altitude should be preferred to an American- tower.

These buildings, according to Lissitzky, also provided superior insulation and ventilation for their inhabitants.

More than 80 years later (2006) Steven Holl  designe an horizontal Skyscraper. The Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China, a mixed-use building including hotel, offices, serviced apartments, and public park (2006-2009)

Epilogue:

1. In the drawing above , Steven Holl compares his horizontal skyscraper To a Typical American skyscraper.

2. I still wonder if the inspiration source for Holl’s buildings Mentioned in my sketch-book above are Actually Le Corbusier’s La Tourette Monastery….

3. I recommend everyone who is interested in the work of Holl, to read Lebbeus Woods post dealing with Steven Holl’s Horizontal Skyscraper.
