 13 years ago MVRDV won a world wide competition to design Berlin Voids housing project, a vertical block marking the void left by the Berlin Wall….a three-dimensional puzzle of individual apartments.

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies,highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

First step:  the inspiration Source.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

“Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

In a previous post, I claimed that Rem Koolhaas is the “Spiritual father”,Of a successful young group of architects working today (BIG , REX , MVRDV , FREE)

We all want to be like them ….young, successful, Creative and innovative architects….

How can we get there?

 –

In this post I will try to convince you that there is a method to get there….

And I call this method, the “conscious inspiration Method“

 –

To be there is not in the air….

–

I will try to illustrate my point by the following example.

What really makes the difference between “another building”, and a winning project?

I can suggest an answer …. Let’s  learn how to get “inspired consciously“.

First step:  don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings

 Look at the following example

Notice the similar design strategy (especially in the lower part of the building)…. A rectangular structure with a transparent skin encompasses an assemblage of structurally independent volumes.

The Wyly Theatre is the “relevant building”,

REX Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus , had chosen to be inspired from it “consciously“.

I learned in a previous post of mine, that architects have varied inspiration sources ….

The first type of inspiration is basic and common ….I call it the “Visual Inspiration” Easy to identify, and characterized by architectural trends , shown in the previous images.. .

The second type of inspiration is based on research…. I call it the “Design Strategy Inspiration”. It requires knowledge and analytical skills.

Second step: You should not be intimidated to get inspired from “Design Strategies” of successful architects

–

It is noticeable for the observer…. most likely, BIG’s and REX’s  source of  inspiration is the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” developed by the “spiritual father”Rem Koolhaas….but they do it”consciously” 

What do I mean by doing it “consciously”?

 The “Conscious Inspiration Method”  is about bringing something of your self.

 REX for example, morphologically gets inspired from the“Stacking Diagram design Strategy” but they add their own Interpretation….They design large inner courtyard garden that apartments will overlook it from within the tower’s upper storeys.

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

 We will start our journey with a building designed by the spiritual father…. The Inspiration Source for all his followers…… Rem Koolhaas

 The next two images are Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s   Television Cultural Centre in Beijing – CHINA, (1st prize in a Competition from 2002)…. Construction began 2005.

This is the model of the internal part of the building, showing Rem Koolhaas’s “Wrapper Strategy” the Inside is an accumulation of structurally independent volumes

 Continuous skin encompasses this assemblage, the walls become the roof and the roof transforms back into the walls.

Two quotations from the REXs’ site, describing the firm’s Approach :

1. Architects have retreated from the accountability (and productivity) of Master Builders to the safety (and impotence) of stylists.

2. The media sells simple, catchy ideas; it reduces teams to individuals and their collaborative work to genius sketches. The proliferation of this false notion of “starchitecture” diminishes the real teamwork that drives celebrated architecture.

 Very exciting …. REX Describe two of the reasons why I suggest to implement “Conscious Inspiration”….

 Availability of the “ architecture  information” probably affects the planning processes and thinking of the modern architecture  Office. I hope the planning process that I like to call “Conscious Inspiration” Will give architects the tools to cope with the abundance of information, and  Create quality and creative architecture….
