In this post we will learn about MVRDV’s Inspiration sources …. Or maybe it’s a “self fulfilling prophecy”….

For you to judge….

In the next image a building designed by Rem Koolhaas in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996 .

The building is designed according to the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”

Rem Koolhaas & OMA Architects

The Hyperbuilding , A self-contained city for 120,000 inhabitants with housing, education, culture, welfare, medical facilities, amusement, industry, retail .

 Bangkok, Thailand  1996

How does the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” works?

First step: definition of size and shape of the spaces in accordance with the program.

Second step: designing the building as a “stacking Diagram” emphasizing the program.

Note the similarity in three projects…you can easily Identify the primary components of the buildings ….the Stacking Process has a clear visual expression….

 Just a Minute….

13 years ago MVRDV won a world wide competition to design Berlin Voids housing project, a vertical block marking the void left by the Berlin Wall….a three-dimensional puzzle of individual apartments.

I can estimate

that the Berlin Voids housing project designed by MVRDV in early 90s is the source of inspiration for the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”?

–

Well…Is MVRDV’s Berlin Voids housing project designed in the 90’s is MVRDV’s “self fulfilling prophecy“?

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies, highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

–

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

The  “Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Inspiration sketch Gallery (ISG) by Eli Inbar

In a previous post, I claimed that Rem Koolhaas is the “Spiritual father”,Of a successful young group of architects working today (BIG , REX , MVRDV , FREE)

 –

We all want to be like them ….young, successful, Creative and innovative architects….

How can we get there?

 –

In this post I will try to convince you that there is a method to get there….

And I call this method, the “conscious inspiration Method

 –

To be there is not in the air….

I will try to illustrate my point by the following example.

A building designed by the successful architectural firm REX possession by Joshua Prince-Ramus …..One of the talented followers of Rem Koolhaas

What really makes the difference between “another building”, and a winning project?

I can suggest an answer …. Let’s  learn how to get “inspired consciously“.

First step:  don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings

 Look at the following example

This is an external image of the Wyly Theatre showing Rem Koolhaas’s “Wrapper Strategy”….A transparent skin encompasses an assemblage of structurally independent volumes

And this is an external Image of the CLC & MSFL TOWERS designed by REX Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus

eliinbar’s sketch 2012–  don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings….

Notice the similar design strategy (especially in the lower part of the building)…. A rectangular structure with a transparent skin encompasses an assemblage of structurally independent volumes.

The Wyly Theatre is the “relevant building”,

REX Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus , had chosen to be inspired from it consciously.

I learned in a previous post of mine, that architects have varied inspiration sources ….

The first type of inspiration is basic and common ….I call it the “Visual Inspiration” Easy to identify, and characterized by architectural trends , shown in the previous images.. .

The second type of inspiration is based on research…. I call it the “Design Strategy Inspiration”. It requires knowledge and analytical skills.

 –

Second step: You should not be intimidated to get inspired from “Design Strategies” of successful architects

Here are the design strategies REX Architects and Joshua Prince-Ramus had chosen to be inspired from…all design strategies are inspired from Rem Koolhaas the “Spiritual father

The explanations and images are taken from REX’s site

Thank you Joshua Prince-Ramus ,for sharing your “Designs Strategies

It will also be interesting to visit my previous post and learn more about Rem koolhaas’s “Design Strategies”

1.the  “Augmented reality strategy”

The ideal office blocks are raised to the planning regulation’s height limit

2.The “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”

3. The “Environment strategy”

The two towers are shifted to make the best possible daylighting relationships between them and their neighbors, and are sheathed in vertical fins of aluminum (CLC) and stone (MSFL) for self-shading and glare control.

…to maximize their property value, views, daylight, and iconographic potential

4. The “Wrap a Schema strategy”

To clearly understand the “Wrap a Schema strategy” visit my post showing Bjarke Ingels and other talented architects” Wrapped buildings“.

In this Post we will see….  “Conscious Inspiration” exists at  best “families”

This is the “Conscious Inspiration” short story of two OMA’s graduates: BIG (Bjarke Ingels) and REX (Joshua Prince-Ramus)

 –

Like in all good families there are mutual influences….

Look at the buildings designed lately by REX and BIG architects in Seoul City , shown in the next images

for you to judge….

REX architects  Project R6

published 2012

Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012 – BIG’s & REX’s “Stacking Diagram design Strategy”….

It is noticeable for the observer…. most likely, BIG’s and REX’s  source of  inspiration is the “Stacking Diagram design Strategy” developed by the “spiritual fatherRem Koolhaas….but they do it”consciously

What do I mean by doing it “consciously”?

The “Conscious Inspiration Method”  is about bringing something of your self.

REX for example, morphologically gets inspired from theStacking Diagram design Strategy but they add their own Interpretation….They design large inner courtyard garden that apartments will overlook it from within the tower’s upper storeys.

For more information about REX’s  Project R6 go to DEZEEN.COM

You are invited to visit my relevant post, Rem-Koolhaas-they-were-all-my-sons: BIG, MVRDV,REX,FREE-and learn more about the“Inspiration Sources” of BIG and REX  and the “stacking Diagram design Strategy .

This is an Eliinbar’s sketch  from the “stacking Diagram design Strategy post….On the left, a project designed by the Dutch firm MVRDV for the “Berlin Voids competition”, on the right REX’s Museum Plaza …….

Are MVRDV’s “Berlin Voids competition” the inspiration origins of the “stacking Diagram design Strategy”?

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

In my previous posts I published numerous “Design Strategies” = “TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules”, of talent and well known architects

You are invited to visit my previous posts and learn more about  ”Codex rules” of leading architects like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Morphosis and others….

What do say about gathering all the leading architects “Codex rules” ,in a “very small book”?

And the design strategy chosen for today’s post is…….. The “Wrapper Strategy”

(you are invited to visit  my relevant  previous  post)

We will start our journey with a building designed by the spiritual father…. The Inspiration Source for all his followers…… Rem Koolhaas

The next two images are Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s   Television Cultural Centre in Beijing – CHINA, (1st prize in a Competition from 2002)…. Construction began 2005.

This is the model of the internal part of the building, showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy” the Inside is an accumulation of structurally independent volumes

And This Is an External Image of the Television Cultural Centre building, showing the Wrapper Strategy”

Continuous skin encompasses this assemblage, the walls become the roof and the roof transforms back into the walls.

We will continue our journey with a building designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus (Rex)OMA/LMN

The next three images are Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s   and Joshua Prince-Ramus (Rex) Seattle Central Library opened to the public, 2004

This is the model of the internal part of the building ,The Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image of the Seattle Central Library, showing the Wrapper Strategy”-

The next image is the interior space of the Seattle Central Library The Library is covered by a glass shell. Natural day light penetrates through geometric openings in the exterior shell, creating lit spaces for reading”

 –

And here is another example …. REX’s and OMA’s  Wyly Theatre in Dallas, Texas published in arc space.com 2005 – Completed in 2009

This is a three-dimensional Internal imaging of the Wyly Theatre the Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image of the Wyly Theatre showing Rem Koolhaas’s Wrapper Strategy”

“A transparent skin encompasses this assemblage”

This Is a view from the inside of the Wyly Theatre

A transparent skin encompasses this assemblage

The next images are MVRDV’s   interior space of the Book Mountain Library in the Netherlands published in Dezeen 2009

This is a section of the Book Mountain Library showing  “ the Inside a “book mountain” ,a structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image of MVRDV’s Book Mountain Library showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy”

A glass shell refers to a traditional Dutch barn style typology

The next image is the interior space of the MVRDV’s Book Mountain Library

“The book mountain is covered by a glass shell; natural day light penetrates through openings in the exterior shell, creating lit spaces for reading”

Notice the resemblance to the Seattle Central Library transparent shell

And the last images are BIG’s Architects new-national-library Astana Kazakhstan published in Designboom 2009

This is a section of the new-national-library  “In the Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image is BIG’s design of the new-national-library in Astana Kazakhstan. Showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy”

The next image is the interior space of  BIG’s new-national-library.

“The interior corridors are naturally day lit through geometric openings in the exterior shell, creating lit spaces for reading”

Notice the resemblance to the Seattle Central Library transparent shell

My challenge in this blog is to clarify the “Conscious Inspiration Method”. I want to thank my eldest son, whose conversation with him makes the challenge much more enjoyable….

REX  architects office with Joshua Prince-Ramus as princial ,is one of the leading architects offices in recent years.

Here  are four projects designed by REX ,in the years Rem Koolhaas was still a partner And after….  and their inspiration sources..

For you to judge….

3. Typological Inspiration

4.  Formal Inspiration

Le Corbusier

 Le palais du Gouverneur

Chandigarh

 REX Architects

Vakko Fashion Center

And Power Media Center

From eliinbar’s sketchbook 2010 – Formal Inspiration

….

..

Two quotations from the REXs’ site, describing the firm’s Approach :

1. Architects have retreated from the accountability (and productivity) of Master Builders to the safety (and impotence) of stylists.

2. The media sells simple, catchy ideas; it reduces teams to individuals and their collaborative work to genius sketches. The proliferation of this false notion of “starchitecture” diminishes the real teamwork that drives celebrated architecture.

Very exciting …. REX Describe two of the reasons why I suggest to implement “Conscious Inspiration”….

Availability of the “ architecture  information” probably affects the planning processes and thinking of the modern architecture  Office. I hope the planning process that I like to call “Conscious Inspiration” Will give architects the tools to cope with the abundance of information, and  Create quality and creative architecture….
