Today post presents for the seventh time, my New “Conscious Inspiration” project…. 100 Conscious projects in 200 days

100projects in 200 days that we can easily Identify their Inspiration sources

These projects are published in ARCHDAILY the world’s most visited architecture website

The inspiration sources for the 100 projects ,are not nature in full bloom ,or wonderful music,not exciting prose

Their inspiration sources are existing buildings

– 

 ? What does it indicates about us

It indicates that there is an expanding phenomenon and we can not  ignore it

Architects are inspired by existing buildings as a method

? So what’s the problem 

The problem is that some of us are experiencing difficulty getting inspired from existing buildings

Sometimes the result of this process, looks more like “Copy-paste” rather than conscious inspiration

 

? So how to get inspired consciously from existing buildings

–

  What was the “floor plans strategy” of the “SnailTower” designers

This is Zvi Hecker’s floorplan for the  spiral apartment house in Ramat gan Israel, designed and built in the 70s

Notice the spiral floorplan with the apartments grouped around a central, load bearing column within which all the service functions were located. In the Spiral House, the retaining column has been removed and replaced by an open courtyard

The Spiral House deploys the principle of terracing typical of Arab villages where the roof is used as part of the living space for the apartments. The organization of the living spaces around an interior courtyard and the use of inexpensive, readily available materials are local components that compliment the geometric order based on a spiral.

In every direction I check….eventually all roads lead to OMA.

This post Is about one of the most Inspirational architecture firms working today….  MVRDV.

Maas and Van Rijs, two of MVRDV founding members, worked at OMA.

The next image is a housing complex designed by MVRDV in 1999…It’s called the FLYING VILLAGE (Villa Voladora –In Vienna, Austria)

Notice the Main characteristics of this structure….

Five years later (2004) the contemporary architectural firm SANAA, design the Rolex Learning Center, at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

It is hard to ignore the morphological similarity between MVRDV’s and SANAA’s  projects.

But the story begins long before….

What are the origins of this architecture approach?

What is the justification for the huge financial effort required to build the  Rolex Learning Center?

What is the added value that the user gets for this effort?

Well in this blog I do not deal with these questions….

The questions that concern me are….

What were the sources of inspiration that eventually generated these structures?

I think that “Inspiration” or “Copy Paste” are the most dominant phenomenon of the 21st century among architects.

 Most likely the “availability of information” enables the existence of the phenomenon.

 The abundance of information in the Web affects us all…. I present it every week here ….We saw more than once ….The differences between “Conscious Inspiration” and “copy paste” are not so big….

 And that is exactly what I intend to clarify and understand in this blog.

 I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on inspiration techniques ….I call them “Codex Rules”.

 –

And finally I strive to develop a method.

 A method that will help architects and designers to cope with this phenomenon…. At this point in time, I call it the “Conscious Inspiration Method” ….

 With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Let’s see how the “Conscious Inspiration” works for SANAA….

“knowledge”

Conscious Inspiration” is first of all the understanding of the importance of “knowledge”…. as many said, and wrote before knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

The buildings Presented in the next images is in my opinion, the “Knowledge”, that was the inspiration base for The Rolex Learning Center

Finally, it is hard to ignore another two dominant planning strategies,highlighted in MVRDV’s  Jakarta’s  vertical city building ….

I call them “Multi Style Buildings Trend” and the “Revolving/Rotated floors buildings”

– 

“Multi Style Buildings Trend”:   Buildings designed by one architect divided into several parts. Each part of the building is characterized by a different architectural style.( materials, different morphology, the building envelope, the building openings etc.)

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

From Simona Rota’s introduction to her photographs published in WALLPAPER, I learned that the Soviet modern architecture of the second half of the 20th century has remained practically unknown to date. 

Come and join me to a short journey uncovering the mutual inspirational relations, between the “Soviet Modernism” architecture, built in the second half of the 20th century and western architecture, built in the last two decades,

At this point, I do not understand how these mutual inspirational relations were created….

First , I will focus on the west getting inspired from the “Soviet Modernism”…. 

In my next post I will show how the “Soviet Modernism” is getting inspired from “Western Architecture” ….

Note the vertical columns at varying distances at le Corbusier’s la Tourette Monastery and the Variable scale of the openings on different levels of the Museo de san Telmo in San Sebastian, Spain.

 The synthesis between the two buildings was probably Rafael Moneo’s  inspiration, when  designing Murcia Town Hall, unique front façade.

Le Corbusier is a visionary…. outstanding architect ….who left us unique and inspiring projects such as :

And other masterpieces….

Certainly Le Corbusier is the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects, in the last century.

Unfortunately Le Corbusier is also the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects who their planning processes is more like the “Unconscious inspiration”= “Copy Paste

And this is how the  story starts….

It all started with Le Corbusier’s Vision of a La Ville Radieus = Radiant city, in the 30s’ of  the last century.

La Ville Radieus promised future of sunshine, fresh air and greenery for city-dwellers.

The design maintained the idea of high-rise housing blocks, free circulation and abundant green spaces…. The blocks of housing were laid out in long lines stepping in and out, and were raised up on pilotis.

They had roof terraces and running tracks on their roofs. La Ville Radieus will be the vertical garden city….

 The next sketch by Le Corbusier, is showing a typical section of  Unite D’habitation =high-rise housing block .

notice it is raised up on pilotis  ,the green landscape spaces surrounding it exactly as  Le Corbusier’s Vision for “La Ville Radieus”  =  “radiant city”

Unite D’habitation in Marseille was the first order Le Corbusier received from the French state starts to be scheduled immediately after the Second World War (1945-46), and was finished in 1952.

1. Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation in Marseille comprises 337 apartments arranged over twelve stories.

2. The apartments are suspended on large piloties .that aloude free circulation and abundant green spaces….Sport at the foot of the houses

3. The building also incorporates  with shops ,sporting, medical and educational facilities, a hotel which is open to the public, and a gastronomic restaurant.

4. Its flat roof is designed as a communal terrace with sculptural ventilationstacks, a running track, a shallow paddling pool for children, and an open-air theatre.

5. The building is constructed in béton brut (rough-cast concrete).

piloties that aloude free circulation and abundant green spaces,The flat roof designed as a communal terrace, The Internal Street(third floor), with shops, medical and educational facilities….

 Le Corbusier painted the apartments in different colors, to create an identity for each resident..

Now let’s examine how  Le Corbusier vision for the “Radiant City” and the”Unite D’habitation”

Inspired ,architectural projects, being built in our time….

And this is a typical “Unite D’habitation” …. Hong Kong’s style….built in recent years.

Where are the raised up pilotis?

Where are the green landscape spaces?

Where are the communal terraces?

Is this the“Unite D’habitation” Corbusier imagined?

A giant apartment-block with endless repetitive apartments,

Lacking uniqueness….

So what do you think about  MVRDV’s  Mirador residential building shown in the next image?

This apartment block is probably inspired from Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation ….is this an example of “Conscious Inspiration” or “Unconscious Inspiration” ?…… for you to judge….

Note for example, MVRDV’s innovative approach to the “communal terrace”….

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”…. 

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

This post is about “Conscious Inspiration”

In the next images and sketches I will try to demonstrate how the “Conscious inspiration Method” works for the building designed by Atelier Thomas Pucher and Bramberger [architects]in Tartu, Estonia.

1. Le Corbusier’s  “Domino House”…. a Conscious Inspiration Source

Domino House (1914–1915) is an open floor plan structures, supported by reinforced concrete columns meaning that the floor space was free to be configured into rooms without concern for supporting walls and the physical The building envelope expression is an independent expression subject to the interpretation of Its Architect.

What did I learn From This post?

1. Once more we saw that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” is practiced intuitively by talented architects all over the world.

2. It Seems that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” does not prejudice the creativity of architects….Perhaps even enhances It.

3. The “Conscious Inspiration Method” is not limited to a certain place, cultural or environmental conditions.

4. Inspiration Sources are varied…. architects are inspired from different periods and different places.

5. An inspiration source can be a “design strategy” or a “unique morphology”, What really matters, is the architect skills to develop and make use of his appropriate “design-tools”.

 

The  “Conscious Inspiration” Method,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….
