Le Corbusier and the double message of the Conscious Inspiration

Here is Le Corbusier’s thought-provoking quote, published in his book “Towards Architecture“, in the early 20’s of the last century

The iron and cement  during the last fifty years brought achievements , indicating the powerful of construction, but also architecture that its code is disrupted

? What was Le corbusier‘s message when he wrote this phrase

It is possible to interpret Le corbusier’s  message literally

Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies that were developed at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century

I think Le Corbusier wanted to  send us a message bit different

:That is how I understand, le Corbusier’s message

Since its birth, the architectural bases itself on the guiding principles

These principles serves the needs of the primary users, we all

?Where do we find the guiding principles

We finde the guiding principles in existing buildings

Architects failed to take advantage correctly ,of new construction technologies because they did not base their new designs on Inspiring buildings

Instead of learning the guiding principles that have evolved over the centuries, they choose to skip this legacy, and reinvent the wheel

This architecture does not serve us

I can suggest a name to Le corbusier’s message , I would call  it Conscious Inspiration

Here Is an interesting example , Le Corbusier has published in his book Towards Architecture

This example shows us how “Conscious Inspiration” works for Le Corbusier

Here are the four Conscious Inspiration steps, who led Corbusier to high quality and creative architecture

First step–  le Corbusier choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers his vision,  guiding principles = Outlining guidelines

002

Second step– this is one of Le Corbusier’s first buildings. le Corbusier implements consciously the principals of the “Outlining guidelines” in a building characterized by periodical architectural characteristics

018

Third step – le Corbusier develops his own personal design tools =five points of architecture / Maison Domino

Le Corbusir’s five points of architecture – Eliinbar sketches 2011

Fourth step- le Corbusier use his inspiration sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, he combines the tools developed and design high quality creative architecture, The building shown in the next image is a completely radical design compared to buildings which are being built at the time

That is how you will get inspired…. Learning from le corbusier’s book -“Towards an Architecture” (1923)

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 20, 2012 by eliinbar

From Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012 – learning from le corbusier’s book… “Towards an Architecture”

Here is what Le Corbusier has to say

About “Architectural volumes” and “Preliminary shapes” ….

The quotations are from  le Corbusier’s book “Towards an Architecture” published in 1923

Le Corbusier’s quote about  the “Architectural volumes”:   “Architecture is the smart play ,Accurate And wonderful of volumes that are connected under the light”

Silos in Canada, from Le Corbusier’s book “Towards an Architecture”

Jean Nouvel Architect

C1 tower  Boulogne-Billancourt

France 2008-2011

From Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012 – learning from le corbusier’s book  “Towards an Architecture”….the “Architectural volumes”

Notice…. both buildings are Characterized by  basic volumes shapes,  this is Le Corbusier’s “Architectural volumes strategy”

Le Corbusier’s quote About  the “Preliminary shapes”;   Preliminary shapes are beautiful because they are read clearly….Architecture is not making any Longer simple shapes”

Preliminary shapes” can be your inspiration and generate a planning process  that  enriches your floors plans design.

Look at next examples ….You can get an impression how the “Preliminary shapes strategy” is reflected in le Corbusir’s and Hejduk’s floor plans

Le corbusier’s typical “floor plan

for the “cite the refuge” –1929

John Hejduk’s   project for “One-half House” 1966

From Eliinbar’s Sketches 2012 –  learning from le corbusier’s book “Towards an Architecture”…. the “Preliminary shapes”

Notice…. both floor plans are characterized by Preliminary  shapes,  this is Le Corbusier’s Preliminary shapes strategy”

Is Le corbusier’s typical floor plan for the “cite the refuge” ……..  Hejduk’s inspiration source?

Hejduk is not the only one that implements in his floor plans design the “Preliminary shapes strategy”  ….look at  Louis kahn’s  typical Floor plan….shown in the next image ….

this is Louis kahn’s  famous  National Assembly Building in Bangladesh

Notice…. the floor plans is characterized by preliminary shapes,  this is Le Corbusier’s Preliminary shapes strategy”

Rem Koolhaas -“They were All my sons”– BIG & MVRDV& REX- Chapter two-The “Wrapper Strategy” or the”libraries syndrome”

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 3, 2012 by eliinbar

From  eliinbar’s sketchbook 2012 – Rem Koolhaas’s “Wrapper Strategy

Inspiration sketch Gallery (ISG) by Eli Inbar

And the design strategy chosen for today’s post is…….. The “Wrapper Strategy”

(you are invited to visit  my relevant  previous  post)

We will start our journey with a building designed by the spiritual father…. The Inspiration Source for all his followers…… Rem Koolhaas

The next two images are Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s   Television Cultural Centre in Beijing – CHINA, (1st prize in a Competition from 2002)…. Construction began 2005.

This is the model of the internal part of the building, showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy” the Inside is an accumulation of structurally independent volumes

And This Is an External Image of the Television Cultural Centre building, showing the Wrapper Strategy”

Continuous skin encompasses this assemblage, the walls become the roof and the roof transforms back into the walls.

We will continue our journey with a building designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus (Rex)OMA/LMN

The next three images are Rem Koolhaas/OMA’s   and Joshua Prince-Ramus (Rex) Seattle Central Library opened to the public, 2004

This is the model of the internal part of the building ,The Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image of the Seattle Central Library, showing the Wrapper Strategy”-

Continuous skin encompasses this assemblage. The walls become the roof and the roof transforms back into the walls”

The next image is the interior space of the Seattle Central Library The Library is covered by a glass shell. Natural day light penetrates through geometric openings in the exterior shell, creating lit spaces for reading”

And here is another example …. REX’s and OMA’s  Wyly Theatre in Dallas, Texas published in arc space.com 2005 – Completed in 2009

This is a three-dimensional Internal imaging of the Wyly Theatre the Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

The next images are MVRDV’s   interior space of the Book Mountain Library in the Netherlands published in Dezeen 2009

This is a section of the Book Mountain Library showing  “ the Inside a “book mountain” ,a structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image of MVRDV’s Book Mountain Library showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy”

A glass shell refers to a traditional Dutch barn style typology

The next image is the interior space of the MVRDV’s Book Mountain Library

“The book mountain is covered by a glass shell; natural day light penetrates through openings in the exterior shell, creating lit spaces for reading”

Notice the resemblance to the Seattle Central Library transparent shell

And the last images are BIG’s Architects new-national-library Astana Kazakhstan published in Designboom 2009

This is a section of the new-national-library  “In the Inside…. structurally independent volumes”

And This Is an External Image is BIG’s design of the new-national-library in Astana Kazakhstan. Showing Rem Koolhaas’sWrapper Strategy”

My challenge in this blog is to clarify the “Conscious Inspiration Method”. I want to thank my eldest son, whose conversation with him makes the challenge much more enjoyable….

Bjarke Ingels Group – BIG…. the most Conscious Inspiration firm working today – Chapter one.

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 20, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s sketchbook 2012 BIG, the most Conscious Inspiration Firm working today

It took me a while to clearly determine ….

The most significant Architecture Firm working today…. that implements the “conscious Inspiration Method”….in Perfection …. Is  Bjarke Ingels Group BIG

In This Post and the Following I’ll check my assumption …For you to Judge….

I will start  with the first guiding principle in the “conscious inspiration method” – “Knowledge”

Here are two of Bjarke-Ingelss’ quotes from an interview he made in 2009 for archi-ninja.com. I can assume these quotes reflect Bjarke-Ingels approach to knowledge

We don’t concern ourselves with being trendy”,“in general we tend to study the works of our dead ancestors rather than our contemporaries

dead don’t complain when you ‘steal’ their ideas ;- )”

“The best way to learn architecture is to fall in love with architects that do it well (and their work.)”

What did I learn from Bjarke-Ingels quotes about his approach to knowledge?

1. Bjarke-Ingels is not intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings and architects.

2. He develops techniques how to choose the right building to be his “Inspiration Source.

3. The “Inspiration Source building” will play the role of the “Planning Process Generator” to be used later in his design process….

Here is a building designed by BIG + JDS = PLOT  that demonstrates how Bjarke-Ingels’s applies the “Conscious Inspiration Method

BIG + JDS = PLOT Architects

apartments building Copenhagen, Denmark

Construction period: 2004 – 2005 more information you can fined in Arch daily

And Here is Steven Holl’s Building Designed In the 80s’ ..

Steven Holl Architect

HYBRID BUILDING hotel suites, shops and offices

Seaside, FL, United States, 1984-1988  (Isometric view)

Notice the dominant configuration of the balconies in a form of triangles

BIG most likely are focusing on the morphological aspect

of Steven Holl’s building as their “Planning Process Generator”.

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:knowledgetools and invention.

Knowledge”: as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

Tools”: develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them, tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…tools that encourage your planning process….tools matching your skills
and generating your creative process….

(You are invited to visit earlier posts of mine showing leading architects tools…. )

Invention”: with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings. Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.
