This short story begins in the 60s when the architectural firm Skidmore Owings and Merill (SOM) designed the John Hancock Center building in Chicago Illinois

Note the prominent characteristic of this building , It reveals the structural system on the outside

There are constructive reasons why the structure beams are integrated in the envelope of the building, but it is noticeable that an architectural decision is involved here

This architectural approach has received further nicknames like

Structural Expressionist or High-tech architecture

In 1971, Piano and Rogers won the competition for the Centre Pompidou at Paris

Centre Pompidou was characterized by its exposed skeleton, and has become a global icon

Interesting to note, the Centre Pompidou unique architectural concept, did not won too many imitations

In 1985 The construction of the Bank of China Building in Hong Kong started. It was designed by architect I.M.Pei

Similar to Skidmore Owings and Meril’s design strategy, for the John Hancock Center

The next image is a building designed by Norman Foster In 1986

This external structural system was designed according to the “Hi tech” style, characteristic to Norman Foster‘s architecture

And today we have Zaha Hadid that makes a “Comeback” for the Structural Expressionist style with her new building

Notice Zaha hadid‘s noticeable architectural feature

From Eliinbar's Sketcbook 2013- Zaha Hadid and how "Conscious Inspiration" leads us to significant architecture

Like all buildings presented previously ,Zaha Hadid’s  new building ,reveals its structure to the outside

Zaha hadid is aware to the structural Expressionist style, you are invited to visit a previous post of mine that show it

She is inspired from it ,and reinvents it ,with her unique fingerprint

Perhaps for the first time, the nickname (“Structural Expressionist” ), that was invented for buildings that reveals their structure to the outside, is reflected appropriately in a building

Zaha Hadid’s Sci-Fi Miami Condo Tower, is a wonderful example of Conscious Inspiration …. Thank you Zaha Hadid
