Recently were published in ARCHIDAILY ,two new buildings designed by Steven Holl, the Tianjin Ecocity Ecology and Planning Museums.

One of those buildings is characterized by a unique morphology …. It is called the “Sponge Concept”.

Notice the morphological similarity, both buildings are perforated boxes, characterized by morphology of a sponge, designed according to the “Sponge Concept” – strategy.

But the previous story,  is maybe least interesting …. What do you think about this story?

Before the Steven Holl ‘s Tianjin Ecocity Ecology and Planning Museums were built , One can see ,that Steve Holl’s well known sketches are already the source of inspiration for Leading architects.

All of the next buildings are perforated boxes, characterized by morphology of a sponge, designed according to the “Sponge Concept” .

A “short talk” about “Conscious Inspiration”   January 2013

Inspiration” or “Copy Paste” are the most dominant phenomenon of the 21st century among architects.

Most likely , the “availability of information” enables the existence of the phenomenon.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all…. I present it every week in my blog, accompanied by my explanation sketches.

We saw more than once, differences between “Conscious Inspiration” and “copy paste” are not so big….

With this challenge, the “Conscious inspiration Method” wants to cope .

I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on inspiration techniques ….I call themCodex Rules”.

I strive to develop a method.

A method that will help architects and designers to cope with this phenomenon, At this point in time, I call it the “Conscious Inspiration Method” ….

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality creative architecture.

The Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step: “knowledge”, as many said and wrote before; knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis.

Second step: develop Conscious Inspiration personal  tools = “Codex Rules”.

Third step: the inspiration Source. (Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings).

Step Fourrealize your design idea (your invention).

Five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method

1. How to filter out relevant knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your vision?

4. How to develop your 0wn personal design tools?

5. How to use your inspiration sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and to design high quality creative architecture?

It’s not a secret anymore, OMA and its spiritual father, Rem Koolhaas, are a critical source of inspiration to contemporary architecture….

In this post we’ll take a short break from the discussion about the “Conscious Inspiration Method”.

Here are two examples, among many others, that show cases of “conscious inspiration” or “copy-paste” Of buildings that got inspired from OMA…. For you to judge….

Inspiration,Inspiration;Inspiration …. West and east… Well there are mutual relations between them…. another reflection for “Conscious Inspiration” ?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 18, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – The mutual inspirational relations between west and east

My inspiration for this post are Simona Rota’s photographs, published in WALLPAPER on “Soviet Modernism”. Unknown Stories”!!

Thank you  Simona….

In my last post, I showed the mutual inspirational relations, between the “Soviet Modernism” architecture, built in the second half of the 20th century and western architecture, built in the last two decades….

In this post, I would like to share with you some of the strange cases of conscious and unconscious inspiration…. from the “Soviet Modernism” period….

Let’s look at some of Simona Rota’s photographs….

This is the known Kisho Kurokawa’s Nakagin Capsule Tower built in Tokyo, Japan 1970-1972

The  “Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.

Second step:   Developing  the Conscious Inspiration tools.

Third step:   Realize the design idea.

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method”

The ultimate inspiration methodology:

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

“Conscious Inspiration” is practicing and acquiring tools to improve observation and differentiation of details.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I Believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:  knowledge, tools and invention.

Knowledge”:  as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing processWe architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

“Tools”:  develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them,  tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…

(I intend to demonstrate some of my ideas in future posts)

“Invention”:  with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

Inspiration, Consciousness and “copy paste”….and everything in between….

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 4, 2012 by eliinbar

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012  -”Copy Paste” Or “Conscious Inspiration”

The example presented to you in this post, is a bit confusing….

I must admit ….At first glance, I thought this example is a typical incident of “copy-paste”

Later on I changed my mind….

This is a new building built in Taiwan

For more information about this building, browse to the next Site:   http://forgemind.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&p=111763

Now look at the following Building, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 30s (1936 to 1939)

This is the Interior, “Great Workroom”, of the Johnson Wax Headquarters building.

You probably noticed the obvious morphological resemblance between the “Mushroom Pillars”,in both projects .

Notice also the innovative system, that allowed natural light to penetrate in between the “Mushroom Pillars”.…

Let’s find out, how to distinguish between projects that are inspired “Consciously “to” copy-paste”.

What distinguishes “Conscious Inspiration “from “copy-paste” ?

….When we add our Invention”.

I believe that each one of us can give a better expression to his talents by adding an Invention ….to an existing building….

Once again look at the next image of the building built in Taiwan

Now here comes the “Invention”…..

See the bottom of the next sketch.

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012   “Conscious Inspiration”Invention”…..

Notice the non-symmetrical shape of the”Mushroom Pillars” of the Taiwan’s building ….

Notice also the smooth and liquid appearance of the “Mushroom Pillars’s”….Unlike the structural appearance of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax Headquarters building. ….

Also note the Ideal Disorder dispersion of the “Mushroom Pillars” in accordance with the “Ideal Disorder Design Strategy” = IDDS….

Unlike the orthogonal dispersion of the”Mushroom Pillars” in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Johnson Wax Headquarters building.

For you to judge….

What did I learn from this post?

1. I believe that each one of us can give a better expression to his talents and Invention ….by implement the  “Conscious Inspiration” Method ….

2. Be inspired consciously from existing buildings. It will lead us to experience a unique design process that will serve our creative desires….

3. The initial difference between “Copy Paste” and “Conscious Inspiration

Is adding our “Invention”…..

1. Today most influential buildings, are the result of a Conscious Inspiration process.

2. It seems as if we are in the midst of the “Ideal Disorder design strategy ” age…. The most common inspiration source today….

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 ….“God is in the details”

This is a Doric Temple

Temple of Neptune at Paestum

And this is a typical Doric Column

Notice the  characteristics vertical slots

Le Corbusier in his book “Towards an Architecture” (1923) is fascinated by the small details Of the Parthenon’s Doric Columns.

Here is a quote from le Corbusier’s book “towards an architecture” ( page 178) about extrusion in Doric Columns…..in other words  “the slots”:

“We recognize the artist plastic by extrusion…. this is the place and time that the engineer is deleted, and the sculpture goes into action

Know look at the next image showing a detail from Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art

Notice the Similarity between Steven Holl’s slots, shown in the image above,, and the slots of the Doric Columns …

Notice the fundamental difference between the tow designs approaches….

The slots In the Doric Columns are vertical … and in Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art , shown in the next image  …. are Horizontal….

Steven Holl’s Nanjing Museum of Art

horizontal slots

This is a typical case of “Conscious Inspiration” ……..

Steven Holl chooses consciously to be inspired from the vertical Doric Columns’s slots ….

But he implements the slots horizontally ….

What did I learn from this post?

1. An architectural detail can be a “Source of Inspiration”.

2. “Conscious inspiration” is also the ability to copy architectural details , and by one small change ….the detail gets a new architectural meaning =“Copy with Invention”….

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”:

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that willserve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

In my previous posts I published numerous “Design Strategies” = “TOOLS” ”= “Codex rules”, of talent and well known architects

You are invited to visit my previous posts and learn more about  ”Codex rules” of leading architects like Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Morphosis and others

This post tells Le Corbusier’s tragic story ….

Le Corbusier is a visionary…. outstanding architect ….who left us unique and inspiring projects such as :

And other masterpieces….

Certainly Le Corbusier is the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects, in the last century.

Unfortunately Le Corbusier is also the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects who their planning processes is more like the “Unconscious inspiration”= “Copy Paste

And this is how the  story starts….

It all started with Le Corbusier’s Vision of a La Ville Radieus = Radiant city, in the 30s’ of  the last century.

La Ville Radieus promised future of sunshine, fresh air and greenery for city-dwellers.

The design maintained the idea of high-rise housing blocks, free circulation and abundant green spaces…. The blocks of housing were laid out in long lines stepping in and out, and were raised up on pilotis.

They had roof terraces and running tracks on their roofs. La Ville Radieus will be the vertical garden city….

See the next sketches by Le Corbusier showing the  high-rise housing blocks

And the green, landscaped spaces surrounding them

“The city of tomorrow or the relationship between nature and man will be restored”La Ville Radieus = Radiant city

The next sketch by Le Corbusier, is showing a typical section of  Unite D’habitation =high-rise housing block .

notice it is raised up on pilotis  ,the green landscape spaces surrounding it exactly as  Le Corbusier’s Vision for “La Ville Radieus”  =  “radiant city”

Unite D’habitation in Marseille was the first order Le Corbusier received from the French state starts to be scheduled immediately after the Second World War (1945-46), and was finished in 1952.

1. Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation in Marseille comprises 337 apartments arranged over twelve stories.

2. The apartments are suspended on large piloties .that aloude free circulation and abundant green spaces….Sport at the foot of the houses

3. The building also incorporates  with shops ,sporting, medical and educational facilities, a hotel which is open to the public, and a gastronomic restaurant.

4. Its flat roof is designed as a communal terrace with sculptural ventilationstacks, a running track, a shallow paddling pool for children, and an open-air theatre.

5. The building is constructed in béton brut (rough-cast concrete).

Le Corbusier painted the apartments in different colors, to create an identity for each resident..

Now let’s examine how  Le Corbusier vision for the “Radiant City” and the”Unite D’habitation”

Inspired ,architectural projects, being built in our time….

See the next image showing the giant apartment blocks ….at a

renewable area (A “Radiant city”?) near Hong Kong’s airport ,

Built in recent years….

Where are the fresh air and greenery?

Where is the vertical garden city?

Where are the “green, landscaped spaces”?

Is this the “radiant city”Corbusier imagined?

From Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Le Corbusier’s dream and broke the “radiant City”

And this is a typical “Unite D’habitation” …. Hong Kong’s style….built in recent years.

Where are the raised up pilotis?

Where are the green landscape spaces?

Where are the communal terraces?

Is this the“Unite D’habitation” Corbusier imagined?

 –

What is remained from le Corbusier’s vision of the “Unite D’habitation”?….

A giant apartment-block with endless repetitive apartments,

Lacking uniqueness….

From   Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Le Corbusier’s dream and broke “Unite D’habitation”.

And this is exactly a typical case of “Unconscious Inspiration”=

Getting inspired Unconsciously….

So what do you think about  MVRDV’s  Mirador residential building shown in the next image?

This apartment block is probably inspired from Le Corbusier’s Unite D’habitation ….is this an example of “Conscious Inspiration” or “Unconscious Inspiration” ?…… for you to judge….

Conscious Inspiration Posts about Le Corbusier’s  Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh

Le Corbusier…. Do we need more evidence that he is the most significant source of inspiration for architects, in the last century?

https://archidialog.com/2012/10/08/

A “small talk” about “Conscious inspiration”

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.

Be inspired consciously from existing buildings, and you will experience a unique design process that will serve your creative desires….

But first we must develop our “TOOLS” or in other words, our” Codex rules”….

From Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 – Le Corbusier, the most significant source of inspiration for architects, in the last century.

This Post is about a dominant morphology that was first applied by Le Corbusirer at the 50th.,….

I call it the “sloping cylinder

The next image is Le Corbusier’s Palace of the Assembly  in Chandigarh

Notice the dominant sloping cylinder on the roof of Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh.

Mario Botta  is recognized as a “Conscious Inspiration Follower” of   le Corbusier,

You are invited to visit a relevant  previous post of mine….

The main idea shown in the post, is presented in the next sketch

Eliinbar’s Sketches 2010 Le Corbusier the most significant source of inspiration for architects, in the last century

Mario Botta was one of the first architects who were inspired from the dominant morphology of the Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh.

Following this inspiration…. Mario Botta designed some  significant buildings in the 20th century

Here are two of Mario Botta’s  most significant buildings inspired by Le Corbusier’s Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh

The short story starts in the 50 with Le Corbusier’s  Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh…. It continues with Mario Botta and his dominant buildings designed in the 80 s and 90 s ,and reaches its peak with Rem Koolhaas’s  Prada Pavilion designed  in the beginning of the 21 century

A short Comment….

Certainly  Le Corbusier is the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects, in the last century.

At this point of my journey, I want to distinguish between two planning processes….

Conscious Inspiration and Unconscious Inspiration as it sometimes called “Copy Paste

Unfortunately Le Corbusier is also the most significant “Source of Inspiration” for architects who their planning processes is more like the “Unconscious inspiration”……..

I intend in my future posts to give examples and explain the significance of the “Conscious Inspiration Method” for us architects….

Frank Gehry and his most powerful design-tool.

From  Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012 –Frank Gehry and the “pile of boxes strategy”…..

Recently was published in Arch daily a mixed-use project …three “sculptural” residential towers designed by Frank Gehry .

As I showed in previous posts of mine, there is a common phenomenon among successful architects that is worth checking out….

I call this phenomenon the “Multiplying architecture strategy”…. (Multiplying of architectural ideas or “Self  inspiration”).

In a previous post of mine ,I showed one of the most common design strategies Frank Gehry applies in his projects…. I Call it the “pile of boxes strategy”….

It started in the 80s ….

One of the most successful buildings designed by Frank Gehry according to the “pile of boxes strategy”, is in my opinion, the public library in Hollywood, shown in the next image.

Three years later Frank Gehry designed the unique Schnabel House (shown in the next image) applying once more his “pile of boxes strategy”…..

A short Comment….

Frank Gehry’s “pile of boxes strategy” is not just a “unique morphology”, that we experience from the outside….

Frank Gehry’s strategy has other advantages….

Look at the next interior images of the Schnabel House …

The “pile of boxes strategy” is an original and exciting technique to put in the building, natural light.

What did I learn From This post?

1. Once more we saw that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” is practiced intuitively by talented architects all over the world.

2. It Seems that the “Conscious Inspiration Method” does not prejudice the creativity of architects….Perhaps even enhances It.

3. The “Conscious Inspiration Method” is not limited to a certain place, cultural or environmental conditions.

4. Inspiration Sources are varied…. architects are inspired from different periods and different places.

5. An inspiration source can be a “design strategy” or a “unique morphology”, What really matters, is the architect skills to develop and make use of his appropriate “design-tools”.

The  “Conscious Inspiration” Method,  How it Works?

First step:  the inspiration Source.
