The “conscious inspiration” Signs

1. Both buildings deal with Transparency.

    Transparent Façade allow the revelation

of diverse activities that occur within the building.

2. The buildings are designed in a unique simplicity of elements,

Toyo Ito defines them as plates (floors) ,

tubes (columns) and skin (facade/exterior walls).

3. The buildings open floor-plates ensuring maximum flexibility

of use and the continuous  activation of space.

4. Significant source of inspiration

for the vertical tube steel lattice columns

that rise up from ground floor to roof,

are tree trunks in a forest.

In 2001, Beijing City selected Herzog De Meuron’s “Bird nest” as the best arena design…

In 2003 their scheme became the official national stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The design team studied Chinese- ceramics as a source of inspiration.

In 2001,architect Toyo Ito designed Tods’ Omotesando Store in Tokyo.

A unique organic design that was called the “Tree Building”

Quote from Post written By Kai K. Gutschow Assoc. Prof. – Corneigie Mellon University , School of Architecture :

Much as in science or any other discipline, true innovation comes not from inventing something out of the blue and by yourself, but instead is only possible when one engages the profession, adds to an existing knowledge base, discourse, or dialogue, and opens up new frontiers on questions asked by yourself AND others.

It is only by participating actively in the 2000 year old discourse of architecture that we can move ahead.   Only if we all begin to see our work as “research” can we begin to raise the level of architecture and the quality of ideas at the CMU SoA.    My suggestion: READ AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, on architecture, or any other subject that fascinates you, take notes, and let it influence your work! The best architects have a rich history of reading and loving books, of being bibliophile.
